A telescope in the room / Sunday edition / 1Cabin

Since it’s Sunday, I’m writing something gentle.

“Miso-kin,” a cup noodle produced by the legendary YouTuber Hikakin.
If I recall correctly, I first saw a “sold out” sign for it at a 7-Eleven in the town where I was living at the time—right around when the COVID-19 pandemic was just starting, or maybe even before it began.

I’ve heard that before becoming a YouTuber, Hikakin worked at a supermarket for a long time.
Just like at convenience stores, when you work part-time or as a temporary employee at a supermarket or convenience store, you gain a firsthand understanding of how products are sourced, how they’re neatly arranged on the shelves, what prices are set, and what kind of people buy them—all of which gets etched into your memory.

I imagine many people in my country have had part-time jobs at supermarkets or convenience stores during their teenage years, don’t you think?
This process is illustrated in social studies classes when explaining logistics, but when you actually see it in action while working there, it’s really fascinating if you’re into that sort of thing.

A long time ago, when I was a teenager, I also worked part-time at a convenience store. A senior coworker had apparently been entrusted with purchasing by the owner-manager, and I had to listen to him complain about unwanted salads that had been delivered and were sitting unsold on the shelves.
I remember one or two times when he’d show me a delivery slip—one of those nostalgic ones with punch holes along both edges and perforated lines every page—and ask, “What do you think of this?” Not really understanding what it was, I’d just say, “??? I guess it’s fine.”
“...Are you interested in this kind of thing?”
“No, not really,”
I’d reply.

Partly because I didn’t understand what it was, and partly because I didn’t want to spend more time in the back room with the store manager and assistant manager if I took on this new responsibility—but if I’d gone through with it, things might be different for me now (laughs).

After I quit that job, I was really envious of a senior colleague who was in charge of purchasing, and I kept wondering, “Why didn’t that salad sell back then…?”

There’s a certain aptitude for this kind of work, and once you truly grasp the overall flow in your head and feel a concrete sense of accomplishment within your own reality, you suddenly start to see how interesting it is.
Running a franchise store is very tough—and that’s probably not the only reason—but the fact that I fundamentally view business as cool and genuinely interesting in practice probably stems from this experience.

I’d been thinking, “This Miso Kin is always sold out…”—seeing signs like “Limit one per customer” or piles of cups for the sister product, the rice porridge (not Miso Kin), left on the shelves for over five years. Then, the other day, I found it on the shelves at my local 7-Eleven.

Hikakin has been a legend ever since “YouTuber” was the dream job for elementary school kids, so I’d vaguely assumed that Miso-kin’s sell-outs were simply a reflection of his popularity. But when I actually tried it, I was truly surprised.
It’s incredibly delicious!
It’s not because Hikakin is popular—it’s because it’s so tasty that it keeps selling out. I was amazed.
I think it’s by far the best-tasting cup noodle out there.
I truly believe Miso-kin should be exported and made into a major domestic industry.
I was genuinely surprised.

I hate people who spout proverbs without hiding their condescending calmness, while overflowing with hypocritical satisfaction—and I hate those kinds of people, too.
Actually, I do like the saying, “Seeing is believing.”
The reason is that I tried it for myself and truly felt, “That’s really true,” back when I was in elementary school.
Immediately, there are plenty of people who cut right to the chase, saying things like, “So let’s go out,” or “You have to meet people, you have to talk to people”—all while giving off a strong vibe of wearing the same T-shirt and sporting a strange smile.

No, no, that’s not right.

I can say this with absolute certainty, because my belief that “seeing is believing” is deeply ingrained.
The amount of information you can gather inside your room and within a mile (one or two blocks from home) is enormous.
Of course, the same goes for eventually walking through a distant, unfamiliar country.

Both offer an equally vast amount of information.

Take the few years it took me to actually find “Misokin,” boil the exact amount of water, eat it with my own chopsticks, and declare it the most delicious cup noodle I’ve ever had.
That’s something I could only have done inside my room.

There are infinite things you can only do inside a room.
Inside a room, each of us as individuals is infinitely reflected, and it continues endlessly.
Which is greater: the infinity of the world or the infinity within a room?
I believe both possess the same immense scale.

Either way, I’m right there in the midst of it all. In my case, I can sit in a beautiful wooden chair with a stylish backrest, wearing heels, while tilting a white telescope mounted on a beautiful Art Nouveau-style iron tripod diagonally toward the sky, and gaze at the beauty and wonder of the world with the vastness of this universe right beside me.

“Word of mouth” isn’t just town gossip.
It’s a vast collection of experiences.

I think “Misokin” is still often sold out, but if you happen to find it, please give it a try.
I’ll share with all of you in the Sunday edition the delicious flavor packed with my five years of experience.

Well then, have a wonderful Sunday.

Cultural Cuisine Page “Italian Rice Porridge” / Sunday edition

or

Prof.O.
Prof.O.

Since it’s Sunday, I’m writing something gentle.

I enjoy cooking, but I don’t have a culinary license.
I’ve always prided myself on being well-suited to living alone, so for a long time, I thought I liked basic cooking but wasn’t good at more advanced dishes.
But before I knew it, I’d become able to create my own dishes using just a few ingredients.

Since I often talk about cooking with everyone on the Sunday edition, I’d like to start a new category called “Cultural Cuisine Page” to share recipes that would fit perfectly at a table—perhaps one that looks like it came from a faraway country, with an elegant, seasonally patterned tablecloth like you’d find in 1Cabin, and a single flower in a glass vase.

The first entry is “Italian Rice Porridge.”

This dish involves simmering rice porridge in canned tomatoes until it turns a deep red, adding chunks of chicken, seasoning it in a Western style, and then serving it on a plate topped with grated cheese and either green or red Tabasco sauce.
As for drinks to pair with it, I’d recommend wine from a convenience store—a crisp, fruity white, or a light red with a similarly strong fruity flavor.

Actually, Yuu—who helped out with the tram segment—told me that for an affordably priced red table wine, you should decant it: pour it from the bottle into a large glass pitcher (or, if you don’t have one, a coffee flask), leave the lid off, and let it sit at room temperature for three hours to allow it to breathe. This will make the flavor mellower and deeper.
If you’ve bought a red wine from a convenience store but find it has a bit too much casual astringency or the flavor is too sharp and harsh, try decanting it before drinking.
My favorite convenience store wine is from Lawson.

Italian-Style Rice Porridge

Ingredients
Rice: 2 go
Consommé cubes: 4
Water: 2 liters
Chicken chunks: 1 pack
Canned tomatoes: 1 can
Garlic (tube): 15 cm (2 squeezes)
or
Garlic (cloves): 3 cloves
Salted rice malt: 1/2 teaspoon (or 1/2 teaspoon salt if unavailable)
Black pepper: 1/2 tablespoon

For serving
First bowl
Grated cheese (mild is best)
Green Tabasco
For the second bowl
Grated cheese
Red Tabasco

1. Pour 2 liters of water into a pot. Add 4 consommé cubes, 2 go of rice, and all the chicken, then bring to a boil over high heat. Since the rice will absorb the water and expand, a medium-sized, deep pot is recommended. If you don’t have one, a pot used for making curry is suitable.

2. Once it comes to a boil and scum rises to the surface from the chicken, skim it off with a ladle and discard it.

3. Reduce the heat to medium-low, add all the remaining seasonings, set a timer for 15 minutes, and place the lid on with a 10-centimeter gap. If it looks like it might boil over, reduce the heat further and simmer for 15 minutes.

4. Taste the dish; if it’s not salty enough, add one or two pinches of salt.

5. After serving onto plates, sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of grated cheese over each portion, then shake the green Tabasco sauce five times over the top.
For the second serving, sprinkle the same amount of grated cheese, then shake the red Tabasco sauce once over the top.

I made this porridge one day off when I felt like having Western-style porridge, using a can of tomatoes, garlic, and chicken that I had on hand.
When I think of Western-style porridge, I usually picture French milk porridge, but that day, the milky flavor felt a bit too heavy.
This dish also serves as a “Weekend Roll Meal” that lasts for two days, so I think it will go well on the tables in your 1Cabin rooms, from nights when the temperature is around 25 degrees until the start of midwinter.

This is Prof. O.
This dish blends very ethnic flavors with Italian ones.
I once looked up at a shop window in Italy and saw beautiful floral curtains fluttering in the breeze.
I suddenly wondered, “What special day is tomorrow?”
It’s strange, isn’t it?
Tomorrow is just another ordinary day.
I suppose I must have been feeling a bit adrift at the time.
Then night fell, my spirits lifted, and I sat down at a brightly lit table.
That’s the kind of dish this is. Please enjoy it.
Prof. O.

Well then, have a wonderful Sunday.

Fish: You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs. / Sunday edtion

SPOKEN LIKE A TRUE"

「You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs.

Enamel

Since it’s Sunday, I’m writing about something gentle.

For a long time now, one of my themes in self-study has been to constantly reflect on fish—those supple, cool creatures that glide through the water, covered in hard jewels, embodying philosophy itself.
Fishing isn’t a hobby of mine, and I remember how, long ago, in an aquarium recreating the cobalt blue of a fish my partner used to keep, I would cautiously feed the beautiful fish—which weren’t part of my family—only after asking permission each time, as if they weren’t really mine.

When I think of fish, aside from the beautiful ingredients lined up on the dining table or in a slanted display case stacked with silver trays, I always picture the shadow of a fish in a small, rectangular stone pond that no one knows about at noon in summer—a fish that swims briefly through the deep greenery as if hiding, its body a supple crimson, before coming to rest in the shadow cast by the overhanging leaves of the shrubs.

Since I’ve written about this many times—both in the Sunday edition and in other posts—I imagine my readers must wonder: Why does Enamel’s heart always contain this stone water basin, and why do tiny fish continue to live there forever?

In fact, nearby there is an unused outdoor greenhouse covered in baked glass. Amid the small dried flower petals scattered like fallen stars, plants—such as aloe vera and others I’ve surely seen before but will never truly understand, nor feel the need to look up—stand nonchalantly in three tiers, embodying a nihilistic essence that exists only within me.

Fashionable-Night-Out  Photo by  Natuty  from Studio.Stock
I’ve heard that Ryuichi Sakamoto once said there’s a ruin standing inside my heart.
Inside my heart, there’s a bench in a quiet artificial garden where crimson fish swim; nearby is a glass greenhouse, and across the railroad tracks where kirin grass sways, there’s a three-story building—whose windows have fallen out and whose name I don’t even know—still standing, surrounded by deep peach-colored hibiscus in full bloom.

This scene is one that actually existed in my daily life for a time.
Funnily enough, as I stared intently at those overflowing deep peach-colored flowers, I thought, “Since I’ll never forget this scene for the rest of my life, I have to memorize it so I can describe it in one go using an easy-to-remember adjective,” and day after day, I would gaze at it intently, refining the words in my mind.

I heard that BTS’s V has been chosen as the face of Champion’s campaign for this season.
The tagline is “SPOKEN LIKE A TRUE.”
At first, I translated it literally and interpreted it as a phrase urging people to speak as if it were fact.
It means, “You’re so fake (you’re not real).”
“Not real” is a phrase from my “Silent Generation”—it conveys the sense of a bunch of childish, naive people.

I just checked Instagram, and it seems the official translation is “The real thing doesn’t speak.”
Is silence a sign of authenticity, then?
It’s just a coincidence, but actually, the “Silent Generation” used to get absolutely torn apart—told that there are no real people in your generation, that you’re all just copies with zero originality—so this made me a little happy.
Portrait-of-a-Stylish-Young-Woman  Photo by  Natuty  from Studio.Stock
There was a song by Chisato Oe called “Real.” Since it was released after “Ten People, Ten Colors,” expectations were sky-high, but it turned out to be a hard-hitting, serious track. Chisato Oe never quite broke into the mainstream, but she went on to release songs imbued with her sharp sensibility.
I’m sorry to Chisato Oe and Epic Sony, her label at the time, but thanks to that song, I was able to spend my school days without the preconception that sensitivity and emotional depth were traits exclusive to women.

This song was included on the album *Minor*, which I had pre-ordered.
When it arrived, it came with this mysterious poster.
The black-and-white photo was unusual, and the fact that only part of his face was visible—everything about it—was a novelty to me before I even started middle school. I took it home, and printed on the poster in a small, meticulous, and somewhat neurotic-looking font were the words:
“You can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs. (You can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs).”

Taken literally, the message is, “Nothing will happen unless you get started,” but
I think this is probably Chisato Oe being lectured.
Age-wise, Chisato Oe is from the generation just above mine, but it also seems like he’s describing a way to spend summer vacation during adolescence—one with a bit of spice—by just letting things slide.

Back then, my thoughts came to a halt at the word “omelet…?” It wasn’t until much, much later that I actually made a real omelet—using a small cast-iron skillet, heavy cream, two knobs of butter, and four white eggs.

“When it comes to things you don’t understand, and no one will die from it, you can take as much time as you need to figure them out until you’re satisfied.”

This is the lesson I learned from this personal episode—one that allowed me to finally cast aside the eggshells.

Well then, I hope you have a wonderful Sunday, thinking about autumn-inspired summer outfits as the season turns.

This album is a representative work from Chisato Oe’s early career, often referred to as the “Male Yuming” era.
In fact, he had already released two albums prior to this—*WAKUWAKU* and, later, *Pleasure*—and as a rising star in the Japanese pop music scene, Chisato Oe was already attracting significant attention, with special interviews airing on FM radio every time he released a new album.
The reason for this was that he made his debut after winning second place in the Yamaha Pop Contest—commonly known as “Popcon”—which was considered the gateway to success for singer-songwriters at the time.

That song was “Nagisa no ONE - SIDE SUMMER,” included on this album. Remarkably, Chisato Oe wrote the lyrics, composed the music, and arranged the track entirely on his own while still a college student; he later stated that almost no changes were made to the original version. On the professional release, Nobuyuki Shimizu is credited solely for the arrangement.
His bandmates from his college days reportedly listened to this song and were stunned, realizing that Oe was completely different from them.

Since he has since shifted to jazz, I think it would be better to categorize his pop and jazz eras separately on streaming platforms like Apple Music and Spotify.
Enamel

This is O.
For most people, “Rain” is Chisato Oe’s most famous song.
However, this album, *Minor*, sent shockwaves through the music world at the time.
It was because his sensitivity and genius—which he likely had fully expressed in just two albums—were revealed on an even broader and grander scale.
The second track, “Midwinter Landrie,” is a song that shaped Enamel’s entire life. She rarely speaks about this song.
It’s such a remarkable piece that it was later adapted into a Japanese film.
Please give it a listen and be astounded by Chisato Oe’s talent.
He was only 24 at the time. It’s astonishing.
Prof. O,

Tacos and Crepes You Can Take Out of the Bag / Sunday edition / 1Cabin

香煎胚芽入り トルティーヤ / TOPVALU(トップバリュ)

Tortillas with Roasted Wheat Germ / TOPVALU
Since it’s Sunday, I’m writing something gentle.

There used to be a small taco shop in the town where I live.
It was a second-floor shop along the street; when you climbed the narrow staircase, you’d find pale blue neon lights in cursive script and replicas of vintage cars on display, and beyond the open door were counter seats and table seating.

The interior had a consistent American theme, with an antique jukebox and Early American-style knickknacks by the entrance. There were three tables by the window on the wooden floor, with sofa seating beyond them.
The owner was a middle-aged man who always wore casual clothes and a string apron.
He had thick arms and gave off a slightly stern yet dignified impression—the kind of person who could immediately convince us to trust him with our meal.

At the time, it was the only restaurant in my town that specialized in tacos.
We stumbled upon it by chance, but the tacos—which were a first for us—were delicious. The owner’s brief, matter-of-fact explanation, which hit all the right points without overwhelming us—who didn’t know how to eat them—made us decide right then and there to come back. It was a popular spot.

He told us he was the first in town to serve Iberian pork, and that at lunchtime, female students would gather to enjoy sweets and other cool, trendy dishes that were just enough to fill you up.
I heard that the owner had a child in the same grade as mine at the time. Whether it was one of our many casual dinners there or a slightly off-the-beaten-path night before Christmas, the restaurant was always full of customers.

As we gradually found ourselves spending more and more money, the indigo-hued nights left me with a strange sense of reflection—realizing we were truly becoming middle-aged adults. It was a rare, renowned establishment that could evoke such bittersweet feelings.

The restaurant closed down. Come to think of it, the last time I visited, I’d heard they might be taking a long break to rest and renovate, so I’d been hoping they’d find a new location and reopen soon. With my daily plans to go eat tacos gone, I waited quite a long time, but it seems they’ve closed for good.

One day, I really craved tacos, so I searched on Uber Eats and had some delivered—but while they were tacos, they were a different kind. Ultimately, since taco rice was all the rage back then, I wonder if there are still any restaurants in my town that serve tacos unless you specifically ask for them?

The other day, when I went to a nearby supermarket, I happened to see tortillas for sale. Since it was hot, I decided to make some light and spicy tacos. I bought two 4-pack bags, looked up a recipe on Cookpad, sautéed ground meat and onions with cumin and chili powder, topped them with sunflower lettuce and avocado, drizzled Tabasco’s jalapeño sauce on top, and ate them—they were so delicious it was almost unbelievable.

As long as you can get your hands on tortillas, tacos can surprisingly become a familiar part of your everyday meals.
I’m a bit tired on the weekends, so I just pick out some taco ingredients—ground meat, seafood, or fresh vegetables—wrap them in these tortillas (which you just open the bag and heat in the microwave at 500W for 30 seconds), and wash it down with a whiskey soda or gin soda.

It’s the perfect “weekend roller meal” for the transition from summer to late summer and into fall—I have absolutely no complaints.
We plan to keep eating them like crazy.

By the way, while wondering, “What if I have leftover tortillas?” and checking the back of the package for microwave instructions, I noticed a recipe for milk toast listed under “Variations.”
At first glance, I thought, “Isn’t this a crepe?” so I went ahead and made my own crepes using the tortillas.

The only reason I need a microwave is that I want to eat them with warm tortillas, but of course, you can eat tortillas just as they are.
Starting from the top left: canned white peaches, raspberry jam, raisins soaked in rum that I made last Thanksgiving, lemon marmalade, and the red one is the contents of the jar.

I chose vanilla ice cream.
I used to love buckwheat galettes and would often make them, but the best galettes are the ones where you mix the flour and the specified amount of water in a bowl, chill the batter in the fridge overnight, and then bake it—so if I feel too lazy the day before, I just don’t bother.
But since tortillas are ready to eat right out of the package, they’re still delicious enough even when served as crepes.

MasterA taught me that it’s best to drizzle honey on top at the very end, so the jar in the bottom right of the photo is honey.
The jar on the left contains rum-soaked raisins. They’re incredibly delicious.

Here’s a look inside the lemon marmalade.
I said I’d post the recipe, but it’s taking longer than expected—sorry about that.
I think I’ll be able to post it soon.
I made this intentionally runny, so if you add 2 tablespoons of the lemon marmalade to a glass filled with soda and ice, it’s a fantastic remedy for summer fatigue.

Also, since my fatigue has started showing on my face lately (summer fatigue), I’ve been filling a tall glass with plenty of water, adding 1 teaspoon of turmeric, stirring it, and drinking it.

If you don’t have any allergies, please start by trying just 1/2 teaspoon.
The taste is what I imagine a “water-based” herbal remedy would taste like.
It’s not a flavor that’s off-putting.
It really helps restore your stamina.

Well then, as the evening air begins to carry hints of fall, I hope you have a wonderful Sunday.
