Since I’ve already had a drink today, I’d like to repost something I shared in the past about the things I usually try to keep in mind after a disaster, when the damage is minimal and cities and towns are functioning as usual.
If you’re feeling on edge, experiencing strong anxiety, or still can’t shake off the tension, please feel free to give it a read.

-----------

It’s impossible not to feel flustered,
but why not try practicing not to let it show in your attitude or facial expressions?

If you make a conscious effort to maintain a composed expression and act with poise, your nerves will eventually settle down.

Try wearing slightly more formal makeup than usual (something stylish, elegant, classic, and vibrant, or chic), style your hair a little more carefully than usual with a generous amount of hair oil for extra shine, and wear a sharp-looking jacket. Even for a woman’s body, aim for a “sergeant” look (apparently this is called “Lady Sergeant.” from Prof.O.)—and try moving with an air of rigid elegance. Even if you’re feeling unsettled, I think you’ll find that your emotions will calm down within about 20 minutes.

When you walk at an unnaturally fast pace and move around frantically, you tend to get increasingly worked up. You start getting angry over the slightest things, feel constantly irritable, and start thinking that unreasonable demands are your birthright.

I love efficient ways of getting things done too, but when you’re in a huge hurry, you don’t usually squeeze past people at a distance so close they instinctively step back, do you?

Over the past few years, whenever news reports air about earthquakes, severe warnings, or the world becoming increasingly unstable and turbulent, I’ve noticed a lot of people walking at an abnormally fast pace, squeezing past others at a distance where they’re practically about to bump into them.

Yesterday (April 1, 2026), there was a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Tochigi in the morning, but in the evening at the supermarket,

I saw a young woman who bumped into my bag and then into the shopping basket I was holding, and just walked right past without even a nod.

I also saw several people standing in the crowded aisles, staring blankly into space; at the trash bin area near the entrance, even though there was plenty of room,

someone came straight toward me—the only person standing there with a shopping cart (couldn’t they have just gone around me?)—and others who didn’t seem to realize how crowded the aisles were, just pushing their way in even more. Even in the aisles, where there was plenty of room to avoid others, people were passing by just inches from my body.

Starting this month, bicycles are subject to traffic tickets, prices are rising, oil prices remain uncertain due to global conditions, and with the start of a new life on April 1st, it’s a season when people are easily unsettled, even aside from earthquakes.

If you practice not letting your unease show in your facial expressions or demeanor, you’ll stop making remarks or taking actions that reveal your confusion to those around you.

There were also people speaking in an oddly hysterical, loud voice; people in suits who seemed unable to distinguish between chatting in a single file in a school hallway and their current situation; and men talking on the phone at a volume that echoed through the buildings on the street.

Even in my town, far from the areas affected by the quake, there were many people who remained in a state of confusion without realizing it.

New menu starting at 2:00 PM
Since Japan is a country prone to earthquakes, those who have experienced a disaster in the past, those who have been startled by strong tremors, or have seen dishes shatter from a strong tremor, may unconsciously experience shock after seeing disaster coverage in the future, becoming hysterical or highly vulnerable. To prevent this shock from affecting your behavior or inner state, why not create an “emergency schedule” to follow after disaster reports air?

After disaster news airs, I spend time quietly. I drink coffee in a serene environment. I buy a few elegant flowers, return to my room, put a kettle on the stove, and arrange the flowers in a small vase to capture the relaxed atmosphere of the evening city. I go to bed early. If necessary, I take a sleep aid. I incorporate these practices—such as avoiding intense news—into my daily routine.

Since today was one of those rainy days I love so much, I ordered omurice and coffee at a quiet café.
This isn’t the view from the window, but the sky as seen from the front of the shop.

That concludes today’s random thoughts (irregular) on times when I feel unsettled.

There are cases where Stockholm syndrome occurs only in the perpetrators .: Today's Random Thoughts (Irregular)

The following contains strong content related to violence, so please feel free to skip this section if you find it distressing.
“Stockholm syndrome also includes a reaction in which the perpetrators alone distort the facts—claiming that their victims were originally allies or acquaintances—as a form of self-escape.”

Please just keep that in mind.
Although it is referred to as a “syndrome” in Japan,

it is not an official diagnostic term for a mental disorder.
(Enamel’s Note: It is not a disease, but a state in which one is unable to cope with reality.)
    From Google AI

Let’s dismiss this as simply a manifestation of the characteristics of someone who has been spoiled, rather than an attempt to frighten you for the sake of it.

Here is the main text.
Stockholm syndrome refers to a reaction in which a victim, primarily in a confined environment, develops a faint sense of camaraderie toward the perpetrator to alleviate their fear, thereby protecting their mental state and weathering that period.

It seems this is not widely known, however.
In Stockholm syndrome, there is also a reaction where the perpetrators themselves distort the facts—claiming they were originally friends or had a relationship with the victim they harmed—as a form of self-escape.

There is a 1975 film called *The Afternoon of the Wolves*.
It’s a movie about a criminal situation (a bank hostage situation), and I watched it when I was younger after someone with a different interpretation recommended it to me.

In fact, this film depicts Stockholm syndrome in a matter-of-fact and accurate manner.
(The following contains spoilers for the movie)

There’s a scene at the end on the runway where the two criminals are arrested and the hostages are freed, but actually, there’s a scene right before that where the hostages begin to cooperate with the criminals.

If I recall correctly, it was the FBI or the military rather than the police, but during a phone negotiation between the two young criminals and a group of socially successful, high-ranking individuals, the hostages start advising the criminals, telling them, “Tell them this!”
The perpetrators hesitate, wondering if they should follow the advice, but when they eventually relay the message, one stage of their hostage demands goes smoothly.

When asked, “Why are you helping us?”
they’re told, “We’ve had a rough time in this world, too. We understand how you feel. We’ll cooperate until you escape. As long as you release us after you’ve escaped, that’s fine with us.”
And so, they end up in a strange partnership.
Despite their skepticism, even the female hostages start saying things like, “People like that—the officials from the negotiation agency—have always been a pain. I’ve been told that myself.”

Eventually, a strange sense of camaraderie begins to take root, and this is where the film truly shines: it depicts the stark contrast in the expressions between the hostages and the young criminals who are cooperating with them.
The young criminals embody passionate human emotion.
“The hope of people who, despite having done something like this, still believe there’s a future where they might be able to start over.”
The hostages, on the other hand, have “an air of near-expressionless dullness, as if a thick, transparent veil were draped over all of them.”

Eventually, after they’re arrested on the runway and the hostages are subsequently released, there’s a scene where the hostages are led away while the hostages watch. The hostages intend to say, “This is where we part ways.” “We never meant to kill you. Sorry for dragging you into this.” That’s the vibe.

In contrast, the hostages who had cooperated with the perpetrators cast exhausted, icy glances or sideways looks at them, then walk away without showing any anger, treating them as mere, unrelated strangers.
The film ends with the young perpetrators being led away, their faces still frozen in shock.

This is an example of the strange sense of closeness and the feeling of camaraderie that perpetrators of Stockholm syndrome feel toward their victims.
While freed hostages are able to return to reality immediately afterward,
the perpetrators not only fail to return to reality but actually react as if they have been betrayed by those very people.

Lima Syndrome is named after a kind of self-destructive behavior in which the perpetrators sympathize with the hostages and release them.
However, Lima Syndrome is not the opposite of Stockholm Syndrome; rather, it is a similar phenomenon.
Furthermore, the term “syndrome” is likely used here because it refers to a transient emotional reaction, much like the flu.

The reality of the society we’ve lived in since childhood is that once a relationship with someone breaks down, there’s no way to make up.

You’ve seen them, haven’t you?
People who break off a relationship themselves, then go out of their way to show up at that very place, force their way into the office, and—no matter how much you try to stop them—insist on “helping” in a bizarre manner.
It’s perfectly fine to call the police.

A columnist I greatly respect once wrote, “In that case, call an ambulance.”
As Enamel—who used to work as a professional emergency operator—I’d like to respectfully add, even though it’s a bit of a needless digression, that you should tell the paramedics, “They seem to be in a state of confusion…” while appearing flustered.
It’s a long-standing social convention.

暑気対策と暑気払いレシピ・本日の雑感(不定期) / Ways to Beat the Heat and Recipes to Cool Off・Today's Random Thoughts (Irregular)

It was 36 degrees in the town where I live today.😀
Today’s topic is enamelware.
Since what I included with my previous message was a recipe, I’m reposting it under the “recipe” category.

By the way, for those recovering from illness, or dealing with early summer fatigue, rainy season fatigue, or the onset of summer fatigue,
please make a little effort and buy two loaves of sliced bread (available in 6- or 10-slice loaves), plus a generously packed, inexpensive package of pork loin ham (around 200 yen) and one slice of processed cheese (the non-melting type).
Place these on a single slice of untoasted bread, fold it in half, and give it a try.

Within five days of starting this, I noticed an improvement in my stamina and physical endurance.

While you’re at it, pick up a bottle of “Delicious Milk Black Tea,”
some cut fruit, pearled barley, and a bag of sake lees at the supermarket.
Mix the pearled barley with rice and cook it,
and add two tablespoons of sake lees to the pot you usually use for miso soup,
adjusting the flavor as you go,
then make miso soup with your usual miso.

If making miso soup seems like too much trouble, try adding
2 teaspoons of sake kasu to a cup of ready-to-eat miso soup or
a packet of instant miso soup,
pour hot water over it,
stir it up, and drink it. Do this about five times,
and you’ll feel a slight improvement in your overall health.

Other than that, try eating nutritious meals.

It’s also easy and convenient to have meals delivered right to your door via Uber Eats or supermarket delivery services, isn’t it?

I think the city where I live—and the region that includes it—should adopt daylight saving time.

Yesterday was my day off, so I wrote all sorts of things until late. Even though it was late at night, I enjoyed a margarita mixed with soda in a tall glass filled with ice, then slept soundly and woke up just before noon.

Usually, after I wake up, I don’t feel fully awake until about an hour has passed while drinking drip coffee made from freshly ground beans.
Today, too, I made and ate ramen while still half-asleep, and then took a shower. But while I was showering, the balance between hot and cold water kept changing repeatedly. I was wondering what was going on when it gradually dawned on me: it’s just before 3:00 p.m. on a sweltering midsummer afternoon, so almost all the residents in the building where my apartment is located are taking showers—or cold showers—at the exact same time! Without even thinking about the synchronicity of human behavior,

can we really just get away with calling it a “scorching heatwave” when the high is 36 degrees?
Introducing daylight saving time won’t make it any cooler, but it would boost work efficiency.
As I’ve written many times before, if the air conditioner isn’t set to 20 degrees, work efficiency plummets, and the economy will never recover.

That’s why in technical workplaces—where products and manufacturing equipment are often delicate—it’s standard practice to set the air conditioner to 20 degrees or lower, allowing work to flow smoothly. As a result, the technical sector’s economy never hits rock bottom, and it continues to hold influence on the global stage.

I found myself staring blankly at this thought while drying my hair.

I imagine lukewarm water—almost like hot water—is coming out of the faucet instead of cold water, but try collecting it in a basin and using a thin towel or washcloth to wipe your face, neck, and limbs. Or fill a bucket with water, soak both feet in it when you get home, and then dry them off with a towel.
It’ll feel cooler than you’d expect.

Back when summers were still bearable—not as hot as they are now—I happened to learn about a “cooling hack” from a senior at my school that kept him cool during class.

It’s quite a heroic tale, isn’t it?

Apparently, the upperclassman had a tin bucket set up under her desk and was soaking both feet in it.
The teachers who passed down this story seemed somewhat pleased to recount this “good old-fashioned” student prank—
noting that while the other students looked grumpy in the sweltering heat, that one student alone was taking notes, looking cool and composed.

If you tried that today, it would just make you feel uncomfortable, so please, for heaven’s sake, don’t try to imitate it.

Oh, and I remember that summer hallway, where a strange sense of transience lingered—
how I envied her for answering “No” to the teacher who asked, “Oh my, are you wearing mascara?”—even though everyone else, who had applied a light layer of foundation,
had to admit they were. It made me realize that even if you’re naturally blessed with eyelashes curled like a French doll’s, life still has its share of hardships.

Since these two people are friends and get along well, rushing to make a decision based on that relationship is something you should never do when facing a problem. So, in those moments, I go somewhere where no one else is around and simply ask,
“So, who decided that?” and toss it aside.

I know that the people at the shore don’t care what I think, so I just press the shredder button and go have some tea.

Romantic Mind Age: Today's Random Thoughts (Irregular)

Jealousy in romance is particularly insidious because the jealous person alone spends their entire life believing it is naturally excusable simply because it stems from love.

Since it is rooted in love, it is seen as beautiful and easy to justify; no matter what they do or say—even if it is bizarrely childish—people tend to brush it off with a gentle smile, thinking, “Well, it’s romance, so it’s cute,” or “It’s romance, so it must be pure,” or “I suppose there’s nothing to be done about it…”

As evidenced by the current focus on issues like dating violence, others already recognize jealous behavior in romance as abnormal.

Therefore, as of 2026, it is a widely accepted fact that only the jealous person themselves continues to believe throughout their life that romantic jealousy is naturally excusable because it stems from love.

I will present a set of criteria that allows you to immediately determine whether a person fits the description of this behavior—which, despite the fact that you aren’t even dating, have barely spoken to them (barely), and don’t even remember them—is labeled with the ancient, delicate (modest) name “jealousy,” a term that belies the lightness, childishness, and juvenile nature of the behavior, which, when done by an adult, is an obsessive action that has gone off the rails.

Whether before or after becoming partners, a person’s romantic jealousy reveals their emotional maturity in matters of love.

No matter how socially mature they may appear, or how intellectual their profession may be, if they engage in jealous behavior—even toward someone who is merely an acquaintance or less, let alone a partner—and use that behavior as an excuse, refusing to accept it and blaming the other person for not paying attention to them, claiming that the person who made them develop one-sided romantic feelings is at fault,
This reveals whether they casually cling to such an absurd rationale.

Exploiting the age-old Japanese misconception that “children are pure,” they claim that childish, immature behavior and speech are simply a form of purity.

They alone are convinced that an immature emotional maturity in romance is a manifestation of purity, insisting, “I possess the cuteness of a girl (or boy).”
Normally, they act mature (←!!), but when they’re jealous, they become childish, or they just stand silently by their side (which is creepy, right?), waiting for the other person to notice them.

When that period becomes completely irrational, and they want to somehow make the other person feel the misery of being ignored or the frustration of being treated coldly—or just to vent their frustration—they start attacking.
(I’m ignoring them because they’re scary, though. It’s at a level where I shouldn’t provoke them at that point.)

Moreover, I shamelessly allow myself to believe that if they eventually come to think this gap is cute, I’ll be treated like a child only when it suits me.

If it’s acceptable for the other person to act like a child too (in this case, choosing impulsive actions— on the grounds that children are immature), then surely it should be okay to knock such a bizarre person down, right? Even if they’re a woman, or a smaller person.

But if you do that, they’ll become confused, and even if you chase them away by telling them to leave, they’ll keep acting in ways that no one can understand.

If you can determine that the other person’s emotional maturity regarding romance is 20 years old or younger only during episodes of romantic jealousy, then it’s better to distance yourself.
If their actions are driven by romance, they genuinely believe that as long as it’s out of jealousy, the other person will forgive them no matter what they do.

Don’t focus on their attitude or tone of voice—just look at the specific actions they’re choosing because of romantic jealousy.

Even though they have no business being there and aren’t even that close to you, they show up unannounced without contacting you first, and even when you ask them to leave, they don’t respond (It’s as if they can’t hear you, isn’t it? Aren’t they usually smiling while looking off into the distance?), talking only about their own business, or always standing right next to your desk?

Or do they seem to feel they have to stand right next to your desk even for a casual chat, going out of their way to come there (even leaving their own work to do so!), finding someone to talk to, and having a conversation just loud enough for you to hear?

Even though you’re at work, aren’t there men and women around you who, just to get your attention, suddenly start speaking in an excited voice, have an oddly high-pitched tone, or keep speaking unnecessarily loudly?

Jealous behavior reveals one’s emotional maturity in romance.

You should let them know that the whole world already knows that people who get jealous act comically.

Just a quick note.
Emotional maturity in romance isn’t the same as experience in romance.
It refers to how much your emotional and mental state in matters of the heart matches—or exceeds—your actual age.
In other words, even if it’s your first love, it’s perfectly normal for someone with an emotional maturity of 30 to exhibit jealous behavior.

Many young people today take great care to look their best.
There are those with a chic style, those with a casual style, those with a geeky yet glamorous beauty, and those with a nerdy, modern intellectual or bohemian student vibe—a casual yet standard look—who eventually rise to prominence in office politics, possessing a tough yet supple and quiet beauty.

So, since romance is a very private matter, I don’t want this article to be taken as a tedious lecture, so I’m adding this clarification.

I’m not particularly experienced in romance, but lately I’ve been asked some strange questions.

Don’t you ever feel jealous of your partner?
A: No, I don’t.
Wouldn’t you be jealous if they had someone else?
A: If I found out, I’d tell them.
How would you do that?
A: “You have a romantic partner besides me, don’t you? Please don’t get any closer to that person.”
Is that it?
A: Yes. If they don’t comply with my request, I won’t pursue the matter any further.
“You have someone else, don’t you? I don’t want to lose you, so please stop seeing that person.” And that’s the end of my request.

A: If they don’t comply, it means they’ve chosen someone else over me.
My relationship with that person ends the moment they refuse my “no,” so I’ll start preparing for what comes next.
From that point on, they are no longer my partner, so there’s no need to feel jealous or express that jealousy to them.

A: As an innocent joke, I’ve acted out a “jealousy comedy” for about a minute on occasion, but it’s happened fewer than three times in the past few decades. That’s because the other person burst out laughing and seemed to enjoy it.

Whether you can understand this or not determines whether your emotional maturity in love is that of a child or an adult.

You can tell whether someone is engaging in simply ridiculous and bizarre behavior—such as paranoid actions, childish remarks, or irrational behavior—just because it’s “for love,” and whether they’re the kind of person who thinks only they find it amusing.

That’s all for the additional notes.
