Hot Topic : 私が死んでも / Hot Topic: Even If I Die / Hot Topic

Google AI

3. Manning(マーニング)本来の語源
古ノルド語(バイキングの言葉): Manningi(勇敢な人、強い人)が由来。

Mourning jewelry
https://w.wiki/UG36

"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players"

For some reason, I’ve long believed that literary writers probably don’t like their readers very much.

Since I’m not particularly interested in people’s backgrounds or personal lives, there isn’t any specific writer who prompted me to think this.
I just had this feeling that they probably don’t like their readers very much.
They’re surely prickly, surely demanding, and surely have absolutely no expectations of us ordinary people. So if they happen to exchange a few words with a reader, they’d have to suppress that sternness and interact calmly—which must be incredibly stressful for them.
The fact that we readers end up dwelling on every little detail of the author’s attitude and demeanor afterward might lead them to think, “If they’re aware of this, then that kind of weak-mindedness itself is no good,” and from there, they might start blaming modern education—and ultimately decide they simply don’t want to talk to readers anymore.
I used to think that if I ever actually ran into a professional author on the street, I’d have to be extremely careful.

But one night, even though I’m someone who doesn’t like to talk to people I don’t know very well, the author taught me that they cherish their readers very, very deeply.
It’s not just a matter of saying, “Thank you for your purchase.”
“I can’t give you love, but I cherish you so much that I want to be someone who walks alongside you for the rest of your life.”
That’s why they’re always worried about you.
That’s what I was taught.

I was incredibly surprised—so surprised, in fact, that even though about a year has passed, I’m still in shock. But apparently, that’s just how it is.
That’s how much I had come to believe that authors, writers, and columnists treat their readers as nothing special—just readers. Or fans.

I also used to think that authors, above all, must be non-religious.
I didn’t really understand why, but I imagined they’d frown disapprovingly, furrowing their brows, and refuse to even speak to me, as if saying, “God and things like that are off-limits.”
Apparently, that’s not the case.

Since I believe there are countless people like me all over the world, I thought about how writers must be very concerned about those who cannot attend their funerals or memorial services after they pass away, and I gave it a lot of thought.

I have various concerns—such as whether society’s gaze on the literary world is too harsh when it comes to the religious affiliation displayed at memorial services—but ultimately, I think it’s best to simply designate the event as non-religious.

At both funerals and memorial services, you get a glimpse of all sorts of raw human drama—it’s painful for those who are grieving, and there are bound to be people who come just to gawk.
On top of that, when readers see the pens and fountain pens the author used to love, I think they’ll feel, “I really wish they’d lived much, much longer,” and on their way home, they’ll be so worried about the author—who is supposed to be dead—that they won’t be able to stop thinking about it.

I decided that, after the professor himself had determined during his lifetime that he was “about to die” da NA⭐︎, representatives from the publishing company, his private office, and his law firm would
decide which of the professor’s favorite garments to use,
ask him to select which of his books to include,
and state that the proceeds would ultimately be used, for example, to establish a fund in the professor’s name or sent to his surviving family as a benefit, and that’s all we would say or decide,
and I would like each and every reader to purchase a memorial book that includes, as part of the author’s legacy, fabric cut into squares with wavy pinking shears from about three of the author’s favorite garments.

I suppose this is what you might call “passing on mementos,” but since the author feels that strongly about it—and readers feel the same way—I imagine there are countless people thinking, “It might be presumptuous of me to attend a farewell party,” or “I haven’t read that many of your books—can I even call myself a reader in the first place?”
I think there are countless people who feel this way.

I actually think readers would be happiest to receive clothes that the author has actually worn.
It would be reassuring to know that they’ll always be with you from now on.
And if you ever find yourself short on cash again, I’m sure they’ll be happy to tell you, “Hurry up and take them to a used bookstore!”

Items like these, which serve as a memorial to the deceased, can be worn in a ring or hung in the tie section of your closet, right?

Actually, I’ve heard that this type of jewelry is called “mourning jewelry.”
[silver KYASYA] Stainless Steel Rocket Necklace, 18K Gold-Plated, Silver, Pink, Cross, Unisex, Hypoallergenic (Gold, 50 cm) ¥2,750 Available on Amazon
“Mourning jewelry” is a general term for jewelry worn during a period of mourning or to commemorate the deceased. From Google AI
I’ve heard that other items—such as ashes, locks of hair, fingernails, or fragments of bone—are also placed inside a locket to create memorial jewelry.
When placing these items in a locket, it’s said that resin is often used to encase them these days, but the traditional method is to use amber.

Preservation of Eternal Life: Amber is fossilized ancient tree sap that sometimes “perfectly preserves” prehistoric insects and plants “exactly as they were.” This characteristic has been associated with the Christian hopes for the “immortality of the soul” and the “resurrection of the body.”

“Mermaid’s Tears” and “God’s Tears”: In European folklore, amber is believed to be solidified tears, making it a fitting material to symbolize the tears of grief shed for the deceased.

Amber Lockets: There are locket pendants made of amber that have been hollowed out or finished on the back with glass or a lidded metal cover, allowing the hair of the deceased to be viewed through the amber. The warm, yellow to honey-colored glow was prized as a representation of “the light of heaven” or “the radiance of the deceased’s soul.” From Google AI
Recently, it has been sold on Amazon and other sites as memorial jewelry.
The “mourning” in “mourning jewelry” refers to the act of commemorating the deceased.

Here in Japan, where I live, “memento mori” is often used to convey the same meaning, but that seems to be incorrect.
“Memento mori” is a maxim—a warning that life is finite, reminding us, “Never forget that you will surely die one day.”

In Japan, where I live, “mourning jewelry” has long been called “mourning jewelry,” but since the pronunciation “mourning” is actually more accurate, the correct term is “mourning jewelry.”

When I looked up the etymology of “mourning,”

The word “Manning” itself is not Latin.
“Manning,” known as an English surname or given name, is a name derived primarily from Old Norse (Saxon), Old English, or Irish (Gaelic).

3. The Original Etymology of “Manning”
The etymology of the personal name “Manning” does not originate from the Latin world but from the following Nordic and Celtic sources.
Old Norse (the language of the Vikings): Derived from “Manningi” (brave person, strong person).
Irish (Gaelic): Derived from “Ó Mainnín” (lineage of monks).

Mourning jewelry predates memento mori.
Since monasteries are places where those in mourning come to pray, this jewelry serves as a tribute to the deceased and a means of finding solace.

Personally, I don’t plan on having a funeral, so I intend to be placed in my coffin wearing an antique dress, a black hat that looks like a headset, and some black lace as my burial attire.
Even though I’ll be alone, I’d like a Western-style funeral,
so without worrying about anyone else, I plan to be placed in the coffin dressed in a classic, stylish outfit—and since I’ll need my cane, I’ll include that too.

Since I’m not doing this professionally, I don’t really have to worry about that, but if I were to imagine a reader who was that devoted, I’d rather they didn’t cry.

Even if someone does cry—if it’s just because they’re swept up in the mood, that’s fine—but if they were to get really serious and keep crying,
I’d suddenly stand up, stand behind them as they wash their hands with a heavy sigh, and make sure I’m clearly reflected in the mirror.
“!!”
“—————.”
“...S-Sand—!”
“You showed up with the number one worst bathroom OBK scenario. What’s wrong? Why are you crying so much?”
“But Enamel-san died... sniffle, sniffle, sniffle, sniffle.”
“So, could you please think of a specific way to prevent people from dying?”
“It’s the real thing!! The death outfit is Western-style. Is it for Halloween?”
“Yeah, it was pretty cheap—5,000 yen. ——, okay, don’t cry. It’s awkward.”
And I think I’d head home, acting as much like Enamel as possible.

The song “Even If I Die” is the final track on the album *Kaarii*, which Yasuharu Konishi created inspired by Karia Nomoto, an artist signed to his own label.

Structured like a musical drama with an introductory announcement in the first part, the album centers on a character named Kaarii—an “It Girl,” the object of everyone’s admiration on the streets.

Kaarii is a girl who has had her share of romances; she doesn’t seem to take anyone too seriously—she’s beautiful, stylish, and part of the celebrity scene—but eventually, she meets the one person she truly loves.
And in the end, Kaarii leaves the city.

Just as Kaarii disappears from the city, it feels as though a season—one that was almost like a movie—has come to an end. After a song that leaves listeners feeling, “So Kaarii really did love that guy,” the album concludes with this track, “Even If I Die,” which serves as Kaarii’s response, revealing what she was truly thinking all along.

It’s a song that feels like a final farewell from Kaarii—somewhat poignant, yet crisp, cool, and detached.

Mr. Konishi himself later mentioned in an interview that Shuji Terayama came to him while he was creating it.

I always feel this sensation deep within myself.
I have no way of knowing what professional authors, writers, and columnists working in the commercial world actually think, but I know for certain that some of them must feel the same way.

“All the world’s a stage, and all men and women merely players.”
William Shakespeare

This means that human beings are beings who live their lives by playing their respective roles on the grand stage of life. From Wikipedia
I’ve heard that Shakespeare’s plays always end with a dance.
I suspect Yasuharu Konishi knew this when he incorporated it into the song cycle *Karii*.
When I listen to “Even If I Die,” it feels as if everyone has come out at the end of the story to perform a revue.

Of course, if I were to suddenly pass away and go to heaven, everyone would naturally be overcome with deep sorrow.

It may sound strange, but if I were to be so fortunate as to spend my final moments in bed or on a futon, I imagine I’d feel this way too. So, I find myself occasionally remembering this song, listening to it for a while, and then eventually stopping—only to repeat the cycle again later.

"Nothing in this world was ever good.
Meeting you—that was the only good thing."

When I get to this phrase, I wonder for a moment, “How should I sing this part?” but the answer is always the same.

"With a dry laugh, I’ll sing.
Thinking to myself, I’m so glad I’ve stayed true to myself."

Shop Pauline

I bought some thank-you cards and a mini rosary at Shop Pauline.
I can’t really think of many occasions in my daily life when I’d use thank-you cards, but I was drawn to the design—which features a single rose—and found it very elegant, so I bought them.

The mini rosary is a small type with pearl beads; I bought it because I love rain and I absolutely love winter.
The butterfly pin brooch has a chinoiserie style and feels like porcelain to the touch.
I don’t usually wear pins with my outfits, but since the design is so striking and lovely, I’m thinking it might look nice displayed as a decorative object on a shelf or in a cabinet.

Actually, both this mini rosary and the regular-sized rosary feature a medal attached to the central pivot.
This is the so-called “Miraculous Medal.”

According to Shop Pauline’s description,

In 1830, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré, a nun of the Sisters of Charity in Paris, and showed her the design we now have before us, instructing her, “Make a medal like this.”

Two years later, permission to produce this medal was granted by the Archbishop of Paris. Since then, because people who wore this medal and asked the Blessed Virgin to intercede for them were granted various miraculous graces, it gradually came to be known as the “Miraculous Medal.”

During the recent global spread of the coronavirus, given the vast size of the Christian world, it is said that people of faith—as well as those who had some connection to the faith—carried this Miraculous Medal much like an amulet in Japan.

For more details, please visit the page about the Miraculous Medal via the link above.
A few days ago, while browsing medals online, I came across a medal of the Virgin Mary inscribed with “Pray for us,” and it really caught my attention.
Having only received an old-fashioned English education—where “Janglish” (a slang term for English that only older Japanese people understand) was the norm—I read it as an imperative: “Pray for us.”

I instantly interpreted the design to mean that the Virgin Mary was telling me, with a severity I’d never seen before, to pray here on behalf of her and the others (like the angels and Christ).
??? What could this mean? Would she really speak so forcefully and haughtily? Is it a fake? Just as I was pondering these questions, I figured out what it meant a few days later.

It turns out that the Miraculous Medal has a specific prayer associated with it.
“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.”
Apparently, you’re supposed to recite this short prayer.

So, that “Pray for us” was actually “Pray for us.”
It’s amazing how little I knew, isn’t it?
I was shocked at just how ignorant I was.

Come to think of it, I actually went to a temple once to copy sutras.
When you have time, you can copy sutras in your own room and offer them, or you can go to the temple’s sutra-copying room when it’s available and copy them there—and then offer them as well.

I was actually surprised when I went myself—it turns out that when you copy a sutra and dedicate it, you, the person making the offering, pay a dedication fee to the temple.
For a split second, the idea of paying money to dedicate a sutra didn’t quite click in my head, but then I thought, “Of course that makes sense.” In fact, I was more surprised that this process hadn’t occurred to me before.

When it comes to sutra copying, the question is: what are you copying for? I’m not sure if this is the right way to put it, but first, you write down the request you wish to make—the wish you’re imbuing into the sutra.
Then, to ensure that my wish turns out well, the head priest (the monk) offers up a large number of sutra copies along with sutra recitations on my behalf.
That service does indeed come with a fee.

I’ve written a fun account of my experience going to copy sutras, so please take a look if you’re interested.

The Madonna of Lippi / I want to be what you saw in me / 1Cabin

Creation is The Best!"

Wooden Painting, Suitable for Both Table Display and Wall Hanging, Oval: “Madonna of Lippi” / Don Bosco Co.
I wanted a painting that would complement my room, so I purchased a panel painting of the Madonna by Lippi.
The iron shelf it’s sitting on is something I bought on Temu.

When people think of religious art, some might view it as something akin to advertising posters designed to promote faith.
However, historically, being commissioned to paint ceiling murals in Christian cathedrals and churches or to create paintings and sculptures to hang on the walls of sacred spaces was considered the work of the most accomplished artists in the country at the time. It was also an opportunity to gain patrons among rulers (such as kings and ministers) and wealthy merchants.

A patron to a painter (or artist) was someone who provided the artist with free housing and a studio, as well as clothing, meals, art supplies, and even covered the expenses for research trips to find subjects for paintings and sculptures.

In the Middle Ages, if an artist secured a powerful patron, their talent and success were virtually guaranteed.
Consequently, the painters whose names are still remembered today left behind numerous portraits of their patrons’ families. Since nearly all Western medieval states had Christianity as their state religion, a large number of religious paintings for churches have also been preserved.

Therefore, Christian art is the cornerstone of Western art and is deeply intertwined with its development.

I found Lippi’s Madonna—a small panel painting—on the Don Bosco Company’s online store, liked it, and decided to buy it.
I knew nothing about Lippi’s Madonna, so all I could think was, “Is ‘Lippi’ a place name or a person’s name? And if ‘Madonna’ refers to the Virgin Mary, does that mean it’s a depiction of Mary?”
So, once it arrived, I was looking forward to searching online to find out more.

When it comes to paintings and small objects—the reasons behind their form, their design, and their history—I always make a point of buying them without doing any preliminary research, and then look into them once they’re in my possession.

That’s because, in my experience, it often happens that—even though I didn’t know about them at the time of purchase—once I have them in my hands and look into them, I discover a beauty or culture that holds deep meaning for me, and that I was actually searching for all along, even if I didn’t know its name.

Wooden Painting, Suitable for Both Table Display and Wall Hanging, Oval: “Madonna of Lippi” / Don Bosco Co.

The panel painting of the Madonna by Lippi arrived one afternoon during the rainy season.
It was so beautiful, and since it was my first time seeing a panel painting, I wondered, “Is this the same kind of painting found on the square panels on the ceiling of a Shinto shrine?” Filled with excitement, I searched online and found that it was “The Madonna and Child” by the painter Filippo Lippi.

Since the title of the painting in the Don Bosco Company’s online shop was “Lippi’s Madonna,” I figured that what I had purchased must be a cropped section of the painting titled “The Virgin and Child”—probably adapted so it could be easily displayed in my room.
That’s what I thought, but the description of the painting was completely different.

Also, since I’d been told beforehand by someone knowledgeable about Catholicism that the woman depicted in “Lippi’s Madonna” is the Virgin Mary, I assumed that since it was labeled “The Virgin and Child,” a depiction of the infant Jesus must be painted at this woman’s feet.

I’m an HSP, so I tend to remember images by their general appearance. (It’s pretty much the same with kanji and magazine pages—I remember them by their visual appearance rather than the text itself.)
So, thinking, “Something seems off here,” I looked closely at the photos from the image search and noticed that the ornament on the woman’s forehead (apparently called a “headset”) was silver in the images displayed online.

Huh? The one I have has a black headset, so I wondered if I’d bought the wrong one. I then took a photo of the panel painting in my room with my smartphone, zoomed in on the headset area, and ran another Google image search.
The headpiece is black, after all.

It turns out this painting is supposedly “Battista Sforza,” as depicted in “Portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino” by Piero della Francesca.
But no matter how I look at it, this is a completely different painting with an avant-garde style.
I couldn’t figure out why Piero della Francesca came up in the search results, so I wondered if it was an AI glitch.

Anyway, since the woman in Lippi’s Madonna is wearing a silver headset and the one in my room is wearing a black one, I wondered if I’d accidentally purchased a Madonna from a different panel painting?

Just as I was thinking that,
I realized that, to begin with, you wouldn’t even notice a difference in headset color unless you stared at it really closely.
Feeling embarrassed by my own neuroticism, I decided to keep it to myself—without telling anyone at Don Bosco or anyone else—and quietly tucked it away in my heart as I displayed it.

On another night, I was looking at a photo I’d taken with my smartphone against the light—so that the light wouldn’t shine directly on the surface of the painting—and noticed that the color of the woman’s headset had turned silver.

The headset was silver.
The headset was silver.

——Was this a sign from God?
I panicked a little, but it turned out this painting was designed so that the headset’s color looks different depending on whether it’s in a bright or dark setting.

Madonna wearing a silver headset; photographed in a dark place (backlit)
I suppose this is the upright position of Lippi’s Madonna, with the silver headset.
In that case, this panel painting with a silver headset that appears in Google’s image search results is

an Italian-made panel painting—suitable for both tabletop and wall display—set in a golden oval frame and based on Filippo Lippi’s “Madonna and Child.”

That description in Google’s image search results is definitely correct.
The title listed on Don Bosco’s online shopping site was also correct.

Paintings are generally not meant to be exposed to direct sunlight.
This is because it damages the artwork.
That’s why using a flash is strictly prohibited in museums and galleries.

After all, even panel paintings are almost always displayed indoors.
However, even in countries where rooms without direct sunlight are considered more refined, opening the curtains allows sunlight to enter and shine on the painting.

In this panel painting, Filippo Lippi deliberately painted the headdress so that it appears silver in dark areas and black in bright areas.

Upon further research, I ran a Google image search for “Piero della Francesca,” the artist who painted the Madonna with a black headdress, along with the painting I had on hand, and
the Madonna with the black headdress is
The image you provided is a detail (the head) from the fresco *Saint Mary Magdalene* by the Italian Renaissance master Piero della Francesca.
That’s what it said.
This Madonna with the black headdress was actually Mary Magdalene.
What’s more, Piero della Francesca was the first painter in the world to depict Mary Magdalene!

From the Renaissance through the modern era, Mary Magdalene has been viewed as a great figure, yet one who has also been subject to prejudices that have caused people to frown upon her.
I love Mary Magdalene dearly and hold her in the highest regard.

I have always seen in her a reflection of the fundamental attitude of a creator—her devotion and intellect—and have regarded her as the embodiment of the great power of creation and the mindset of “wanting to share the very best of what I know.”

Considering the historical context, I can imagine that while it was possible to paint Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, it was quite difficult to paint Mary Magdalene.
After all, doing so could have led to excommunication and expulsion from the social community.

That is precisely why Piero della Francesca’s achievement in boldly depicting Mary Magdalene—and his history of following his own creativity, believing that it is only natural to paint what one feels compelled to paint—is a story that stirs our hearts even today.

Lippi likely created this wonderful design as his “Madonna” as a tribute to “Piero della Francesca, the master of the Italian Renaissance.”

The color scheme of Lippi’s headdress follows biblical references: the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ at night, while Mary Magdalene washed Jesus Christ’s feet and anointed them with oil using her hair during the day.

In Lippi’s Madonna, the headdress turns silver in dim light (at night)—as Mary’s hair is golden—and turns black in bright light (during the day). (Mary Magdalene’s hair is black.)

Depicting both the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene under the single name “Maria” struck me—someone who has often used the hip-hop artistic technique of double meanings in my writing—as an even stranger coincidence.

People who realized the significance of this small panel painting have continued to create Lippi’s Madonna ever since—a magnificent work depicting the Virgin Mary in prayer, with her appearance differing between light and dark areas—and one such panel painting has now found its way into my room.

The traces of Spinoza’s dance that I discovered in June brought me a sense of exhilaration. “Creation is The Best!”

This is O.
It’s quite a story, isn’t it?
I was surprised. Really surprised.
What is it with Enamel, anyway?
Why do I keep winning things like this?
When I asked her, she said she has unusually good luck with raffles. Ever since she won second prize—an expensive jigsaw puzzle—on her very first try as a child, she’s been too scared to enter them very often.

Actually, I used to take art lessons. So I know this—it’s called a “hidden image.”
It’s a technique where a different image is hidden within a single painting, giving a charming wink only to the person who owns it.
I’m so glad you bought it, Enamel!

I feel like this is an anthem for people living their everyday lives today.
I like the version by Lizzo and SZA.
I’d love to see the three of them—including Whoopi Goldberg—sing it together.

I don’t usually listen to songs like this, but I think it’s a perfect fit for this story about Madonna that Lippy shared.
