明日はハロウィンですね。 / Tomorrow is Halloween.

一連のハロウィングッズは、今年は全部TEMUで購入しました。

 

ハロウィンは一ヶ月前から部屋を飾るのが一般的なんだそうです。

本式では、10月15日にハロウィンの飾りを済ませるそうです。

 

元々収穫祭と豊作を願ってのお祭りのようですが、私は何故か冬至に行われていた、と勘違いをしていました。

今年、ハロウィンの準備をしながら、そういえば・・・？　と、今は10月なのでどう考えても冬至とは関係がありませんね。

 

ハロウィンについてWikipediaで調べていたら、何となくキリスト教が発生する以前の世界各地での古代のお祭りの名残りなのではないかな、と感じました。

延々と調べていかなければならないので、私は衣替えをしたりする方を選びましたが、日本人にとって「精霊」という考え方は馴染みが無く、おそらくは日本には精霊と呼ばれる存在は居なかったのだと思います。

 

私はハロウィンの気楽でちょっぴりクスッと笑える、ほのぼのしたイベントが好きなので、

こういった力の抜き加減でジョークにするセンスが好きです。

本格的なやり方も知りたいですし、昨今の「日本のハロウィンが面白い」という価値観も嬉しいです。

 

日本におけるハロウィンは、

と有りますので、近年、素敵な若者達がお膝元の東京でハロウィンを始めたのは、彼女達は恐らくこの歴史を知っていたのでは無いでしょうか？

 

Wikiのハロウィンページを見ると、

この頃のハロウィンは、少しスパイシーなジョーク要素が有りますし、ハロウィンの日に妖精やゴースト、悪役など、良くないとされる者やあまり本道でない者の仮装をするので、それについて一体どう思っているのか？　とキリスト教の各宗派の首長に公式見解を尋ねるのは、少々意地悪だな、と思います。

 

小さな子供が仮装をしてみたくってお家を訪ねたり、安全な中、トリック　オア　トリートと言ったら、上記の厳しい公式判断を持っている方でも、今日はプライベートなので、と眼を細めるだろうことは容易に想像できるからです。

 

昔から、せっかくの楽しいほのぼのとした物が、急にワーーッ！と興奮してハイテンションでやって来て、ただ騒いで暴れて物を壊す為だけの異様な人達によって、台無しにされる、のを私も見てきました。

実は私の住んでいる街にも、夏の楽しいお馴染みの、皆の楽しみが、植栽を踏み荒らしたり街路樹によじ登ったりして、めちゃくちゃにされ永遠に中止となった事があります。

 

夏、各町でそれぞれ工夫をして、そっと「今年もまた」と黙って楽しんでいたり、実はその日に街の人達が、素敵なお洒落をする素敵な日だったのに、イベントの日だけ急に乱暴な態度を取ったり、普段は絶対しないのに、静かなお店の店頭で強気で大きな声を出しお店の人の返事を嘲笑ったりする人達が現れて、私も店頭の雰囲気を元に戻したりして、お店の方にホッと笑顔を返された事もあります。

 

この人達が一体どこからやって来るのか、何故分かっていて台無しにする為に来るのか、ずっと考えているけれど分かりません。

ある方は、素敵な若者が自分達で作り楽しんでいた、折角の街のハロウィンが台無しにされてしまった件に触れ、「そいつらがどこから来るか分かっていたら、二度と来ないように尽力していた。」と言っておられました。

 

2025年現在、私に分かる事は、あの感じ。

ただ盛り上がってわいわいやっているのとは別の、

やたらデカい声を張り上げて周囲を威嚇する興奮状態の人が、少なくとも3人集まっていたら、そっとその場を離れましょう。

 

ギャラリーが居なければ、あいつらは騒ぎません。 

ちらっとでも見てはいけません。

良く分かりませんが、それで注目を集めているとさらに興奮して喜び騒ぐからです。

 

雰囲気を作りましょう。

ほのぼのとわいわいと健康的に、雰囲気のインテリジェンスで押さえつけてやるのも、一手です。

 

盛り上がるのと、叫びまくって威嚇したり、その日だけ人に暴力を振るって良い、物を壊して良い、と暴れるのは、違います。

 

私達全員、それを知っていますので、賑やかにわいわいとほのぼのと楽しくしているのに、注目を浴びたくてあいつらが乗っかって来たら、サッと交わしてやりましょう。

This year, I bought all my Halloween decorations at TEMU.

Apparently, it's common to start decorating your room a month before Halloween.

Traditionally, Halloween decorations are supposed to be finished by October 15th.

It seems to have originated as a harvest festival and a celebration wishing for a bountiful harvest, but for some reason, I mistakenly thought it was held on the winter solstice.

While preparing for Halloween this year, I suddenly thought, “Wait a minute...?” Since it's October now, it definitely has nothing to do with the winter solstice.

Looking up Halloween on Wikipedia, I got the feeling it might be a remnant of ancient festivals from around the world that predate Christianity.

Since I'd have to research it endlessly, I chose to focus on changing my wardrobe instead. The concept of “spirits” isn't familiar to Japanese people, and I suspect there probably weren't any beings called spirits in Japan.

I like Halloween because it's a lighthearted, slightly amusing, and heartwarming event.

So, given that, I think it's a bit mean to ask the leaders of various Christian denominations for their official views on Halloween, especially since wonderful young people started celebrating it in Tokyo, right in their backyard, in recent years. They probably knew this history, didn't they?

Looking at the Halloween page on Wikipedia,

Halloween back then had a bit of a spicy joke element to it. And since people dress up as fairies, ghosts, villains, and other beings considered bad or not quite orthodox on Halloween, I wonder what they really think about that?　asking the heads of various Christian denominations for their official stance on this seems a bit mean-spirited.

It's easy to imagine that even those holding such strict official views would squint their eyes and say, “Well, today is private,” when small children, wanting to dress up, visit homes and safely say “Trick or treat!”

I've seen it happen before: a genuinely fun, heartwarming tradition suddenly ruined by strange people who arrive all hyped up, just to make noise, cause chaos, and break things.

Actually, in the town where I live, a beloved summer event that everyone enjoyed was ruined forever because people trampled the plantings and climbed the street trees, wrecking everything.

In summer, each town puts its own unique spin on things, quietly enjoying the thought of “this year again.” It was actually a wonderful day when townspeople dressed up stylishly, but on the event day itself, people suddenly appeared acting violently, shouting loudly and aggressively at quiet shop fronts—things they'd never do normally—mocking the shopkeepers' responses. I've even helped restore the shopfront atmosphere, only to be met with a relieved smile from the shopkeeper.

I've always wondered where these people come from, why they come knowing they'll ruin things, but I still don't understand.

One person mentioned how a wonderful Halloween celebration, created and enjoyed by lovely young people in their town, was ruined. They said, “If I'd known where those people came from, I would have done everything to stop them from coming back.”

As of 2025, what I do understand is that feeling.

It's different from just getting excited and having fun.

If you see at least three people in that state of excitement, shouting excessively loudly to intimidate those around them, quietly leave the area.

If there's no audience, they won't make a scene.

Don't even glance at them.

I'm not entirely sure why, but they get even more excited and revel in the chaos when they feel they're getting attention.

Create an atmosphere.

A warm, lively, healthy vibe—using the power of positive energy to suppress them is one approach.

Getting excited is different from screaming threats, acting like violence and destruction are okay just for that day, and running amok.

We all know this. So, if we're having a lively, cheerful, warm, and fun time, and they try to hijack it just to get attention, let's smoothly sidestep them.

That's all. Tomorrow is Halloween, right?

日曜日なので、穏やかな内容を書いています。

 

何故か古い建物が好きです。

どうしたのかな？　と自分で思う程、歩いているときに古い建物を何処かで探しています。

 

アンティークな雰囲気のある洋館もですが、古いビルがとても好きです。

実際、私が自炊をしていたビルも古いビルディングで、所謂雑居ビルであったのを、居住用に内装を変えた部屋に住んでいました。

ドアは鉄製で懐かしい古さの新聞受けが付いており、呼び鈴はドアの真ん中だったんですが、鳴らないので私に用がある人は必ずドアをノックする約束になっていました。

そんな頃から、"Internet Slang Do for My Star You."ならぬ、 "Only My Life Slang Do for My Fucking Warm You."をやっていた訳です。

 

なので不要な勧誘などは、呼び鈴が鳴らないので何回か無音を押した後、すいませーん、とドアの外から声を掛けるしかなかったんです。

偶然ドアをノックしても、誰とも今日約束していないのだから、当然開けません。

 

元々その部屋は紹介で住むようになった部屋で。

最初は私の縁の学校があるエリアの部屋が希望予算と合っており、新鮮な野菜や肉が安い市場も近かったので見に行ったら、木のドアの小さな部屋で、ドアの下がギザギザにめくれていたのを見て、これ位なら住んで直せばいいや、と、

「じゃあここでお願いします。」と言ったら不動産屋の若い営業マンさんが、

「いいんですか？」と言うので、

ははーん、安くて良い部屋を私に貸りられると困るんだな、と思いながら「ええ！」と答えると、

「この前は道路ですよ？」

「便利でいいです。」

「夜も賑やかですよ。」

「いいです。便利で。」

「・・・。」

「・・・。」

「ちょ、ちょっと待ってください。他の物件を探しますから」

と私が「はい」と言う前に、その部屋は無しになってしまったんです。 

 

後日電話を貰い、他の部屋に連れて行かれて、

「ここなら水道代込みの家賃です。ドアが鉄ですし。 」

と自信を持ってお勧めされたので、そこにしました。

あの部屋を貸すのがそんなに惜しいのかな、としつこく思っている若い私の顔を見て、

実は帰り際に、

「木のドアはいくら安くても危ないですよ。今後引っ越す時も住んではダメです。紹介はしますが。」

と言われて、随分良い方に紹介して頂いたのだな、とその後も感謝していました。

 

お風呂はガス式で、お水を溜めて沸かすタイプな上、湯船の奥の壁に小さなスペースと、上に蝶番が付いた少しだけ開けられる引き戸タイプの磨りガラスの窓が有り、そこがとてもお気に入りでした。

 

何故か浴室に大きなスペースが付いていて、調べると洗濯機を置くスペースだったそうですが、他の穴は埋めてしまっていたらしく、使えませんでした。

他にも部屋の中に、何か四角いビニールカバーが付いた器具が置いてあり、何だろう？　とカバーを外して見ても良く分からなかったんですが、「それガスヒーターじゃない？」と当時、インフラに詳しい人に教えてもらい、ガス屋さんに安全を確認して貰った後、ある寒い冬の日に点けてみると、ボッという音と共にとても熱い温風が出てきて、その年は暖かく過ごせました。

 

この頃インバウンドという名前で、海外から日本のあちこちの都市や街にやって来る、観光旅行向けの経済が発展しているそうですね。

私の住む街も同じく、沢山の観光客の方々がやって来て下さっています。

 

冒頭の写真の本は、ベトナム建築のルーツについての美しい写真が載っていて、撮影当時、実際に中で暮らしている方々の風景も載っています。

その生活の感じが、全く違う文化圏の小さな学生街の小さな雑居ビルの一室にもありました。

 

夜、そっとお風呂に入り、オレンジ色の灯りの中で観葉植物越しの磨りガラスを眺めていると、どうしてもそこには一輪の大きな百合の花の方が相応しいように思えて仕方がなかった夜が、きっとこの本に掲載されている、数分前の生活の痕跡にも確実にあるのだと実感します。

 

ベトナムと言えばコロニアル建築が有名ですが、私がもし街を訪れるなら、もっと暮らしている人達の為の建築群を見たいと思うんです。

ハノイ旧市街の無為と有為の美しさが混在する、少し古い、現実の建築群を見たいし、一体、どのようにこの国のこの街の人達は暮らしているのだろう？

普段は何を食べているのだろう？

この季節は毎日の皿に何が乗って美味しそうな湯気を立てているのだろう？　が、街を訪れる人々の本当の興味のような気がします。

 

古い日本の木造建築の街並みも良いですが、

沢木耕太郎氏が「深夜特急 1  香港・マカオ 」で記録している、1980年以前の香港。

爆発する生命力が喧騒を作る夜市のようなものが、ジャパニーズ・ナイトマーケットとして在ると、

日本にも昔存った亜鉛のコロが付いたコンテナに、

鳥や豚がゆっくり回転しながら焼かれていたパラソルと夜と賑わいと、

唐もろこしを突っ込んだ油紙の熱々の匂い、

ぐるっと包んだ藁半紙の底に並んでいる回転焼き、

焼き栗を煎る大粒の鉄が回転している炉の甘い経済の匂いを、

ホテルから少し行った辺りに通年開いておけば、

どうして違う国で違う食べ物なのに、

私達は必ずタングステン灯の下、

四角くカットされたお好み焼きを黒いソースが跳ねた白い容器の縁を眺めながら、無心で食べてしまうんでしょうか？　と皆さん、嬉しそうに笑うと思うのですが。

ベトナム建築行脚 / Vietnam Architectural Journey

Since it's Sunday, I'm writing something gentle.

For some reason, I love old buildings.
I catch myself wondering, “What's gotten into me?” because whenever I'm walking around, I find myself searching for old buildings somewhere.
 
I like Western-style houses with an antique feel, but I especially love old office buildings.
In fact, the building where I lived and cooked for myself was an old building too. It was a so-called multi-tenant building, and I lived in a room that had been converted for residential use.
The door was iron, with a nostalgically old-fashioned newspaper slot attached. The doorbell was right in the middle, but it didn't work, so anyone needing to see me had to knock. We had an unspoken rule about it.
Back then, I was doing my own version of “Internet Slang Do for My Star You.”—or rather, “Only My Life Slang Do for My Fucking Warm You.”
 
So for unwanted solicitations, since the doorbell didn't work, they'd press it silently a few times before calling out “Excuse me!” from outside the door.
Even if they knocked by chance, I wouldn't open it—I hadn't made any appointments with anyone today.
 
I originally got that room through a referral.
At first, I wanted a place near my school that fit my budget, and there was a cheap market for fresh veggies and meat nearby. When I went to see it, it was a small room with a wooden door, and the bottom was peeling up in jagged pieces. I thought, “Well, I can live with this and fix it up later,” so I said,
“Okay, I'll take this one.” When I said that, the young real estate agent asked,
“Are you sure?”
Huh, he must be worried about letting me have such a cheap, good room, I thought, and replied, “Yes!”
“But it's right by the road, you know?”
“It's convenient, that's fine.”
“It gets noisy at night too.”
“That's fine. Convenience is what matters.”
“....”
“....”
“Wait, hold on. I'll look for another place.”
Before I could say “Yes,” that room was no longer available.
 
Later, I got a call and was taken to another place.
“This one includes water in the rent. And the door is steel.”
He recommended it confidently, so I took it.

Seeing my persistent young face wondering if they were that reluctant to rent that room,
actually, as I was leaving,
they said, “Wooden doors are dangerous, no matter how cheap. You shouldn't live in them when you move next time either. I'll refer you, though.”
After that, I kept feeling grateful, realizing they'd referred me to a much better place.
 

The bath was gas-heated, the type where you fill it with water and heat it up. What I really loved about it was the small space on the back wall of the tub and the frosted glass window above it—a sliding door type that hinged and opened just a little.

 
For some reason, the bathroom had a large extra space. I heard it was meant for a washing machine, but the other holes seemed to have been filled in, so it was unusable.
There was also a device in the room covered by some kind of square vinyl cover. I wondered what it was, but even after removing the cover, I couldn't figure it out. Someone knowledgeable about infrastructure at the time told me, “Isn't that a gas heater?” After having the gas company check it for safety, I turned it on one cold winter day. With a popping sound, very hot warm air came out, and I was able to stay warm that year.
 
These days, I hear the economy is growing around inbound tourism, with visitors coming from overseas to cities and towns all over Japan.
My town is no exception; many tourists come to visit us.

 

The photography book features beautiful images tracing the roots of Vietnamese architecture, including scenes of people living within those structures at the time of shooting.

That sense of daily life was also present in a single room within a small, shared apartment building in a tiny student district of a completely different cultural sphere.

 

At night, when I quietly step into the bath and gaze through the frosted glass beyond the houseplant in the orange glow, I can't help but feel that a single large lily would be far more fitting there. I realize that night must surely exist within the traces of life just minutes ago, preserved in this book.

 

Vietnam is famous for its colonial architecture, but if I were to visit the city, I'd want to see the buildings made for the people who actually live there.

I want to see the slightly older, real buildings of Hanoi's Old Quarter, where the beauty of inaction and action coexist. And I wonder, how do the people of this country, this city, actually live?

What do they eat on a daily basis?

What delicious, steaming dishes grace their plates each day in this season? That, I suspect, is the true interest of those who visit the city. 

The streetscapes of old Japanese wooden architecture are lovely,

but the Hong Kong before 1980, as recorded by Kōtarō Sawaki in Midnight Express 1: Hong Kong & Macau,

That explosive vitality creating the clamor of night markets—if such a thing existed as a Japanese Night Market,

then Japan too once had those zinc-coated containers,

where birds and pigs slowly rotated while roasting beneath umbrellas, night, and bustle,

the hot scent of oil paper stuffed with sweet corn,

rotating cakes lined up at the bottom of straw-wrapped paper parcels,

the sweet, economical scent of large iron rotisseries roasting chestnuts.

If such a place were open year-round just a short walk from the hotel,

then why, even though it's a different country with different food,

do we inevitably find ourselves under tungsten lights,

staring at the edges of white containers splattered with black sauce, mindlessly eating square-cut okonomiyaki?

I think everyone would smile happily at that thought.

シフォンケーキが食べたくなり、外出したついでに購入して来ました。

シフォンケーキは私は秋から食べたくなります。

 

写真は、私の住む街の地下街に出店していたchiffon cake MARIEのシフォンケーキです。

テイクアウト専門のようで、とても感心したのはこのパッケージの形なんですね。

シフォンケーキってやはりふわふわなので、持って帰る時に潰れてしまわないかが心配です。

またはシフォンケーキなので、ハードケースに入っていて嵩張る（かさばる）んですよね。

それで一個を四角い厚紙の中に入れてテイクアウト専門にしていたので、これなら！とさっそく購入しました。

バナナが360円

キャラメルが370円

栗が420円

チョコが390円

紙袋が20円

すべてカップシフォンです。

バナナは、思ったより重くなくて美味しい。

キャラメルは、コクがありシャープな甘さ。（by O.先生）

栗は、和のさっぱり尖った甘さ。

チョコは濃い味と香りで、ちゃんとショコラを食べたという感じ。 

シフォン生地は柔らかさと軽さがあり、夕方偶然人が居ない時間だったので入った時には残り少なくて、人気店なのだな、と食べても分かりました。

O.先生はキャラメルシフォンがお気に入りだそうです。

私は大昔ローソンの店頭で販売していたピロシキを、冬の早朝まだ薄暗い時間に白い息を吐きながら買って来て、台所でコーヒーと一緒に食べるのが好きだったんですが、やはりこういった物は紙の包み紙が一番良いと思うんです。

写真はセブンイレブン店頭の肉まんコーナーの隣りで売っている、お店で焼いたパンです。

美味しかったです。

I felt like eating chiffon cake, so I bought some while I was out.

I start craving chiffon cake from autumn onward.

The photo shows the chiffon cake from chiffon cake MARIE, which had a stall in the underground shopping arcade of my town.

It seems to be takeout-only, and what really impressed me was the shape of this packaging.

Chiffon cake is so fluffy, you worry it might get squashed on the way home.

Or, because it's chiffon cake, it's in a hard case and bulky.

So, they put one inside a square cardboard box specifically for takeout, and I thought, “This is it!” and bought one right away.

Banana: 360 yen

Caramel: 370 yen

Chestnut: 420 yen

Chocolate: 390 yen

Paper bag: 20 yen

All are cup chiffon cakes.

The banana flavor is surprisingly light and delicious.

The caramel has a rich depth and a sharp sweetness. (by Prof.O.)

The chestnut has a clean, sharp sweetness with a Japanese twist.

The chocolate has a deep flavor and aroma, giving you that satisfying “I'm eating real chocolate” feeling.

The chiffon cake has a soft and light texture. I happened to visit in the evening when it was quiet, and there wasn't much left when I entered. Even after eating it, I could tell it's a popular shop.

Prof.O. apparently favors the caramel chiffon.

I recently discovered Seven-Eleven's THE SEVEN SWEETS “Melt Cream & Chiffon Cake.”

I happened to buy the last two, ate them, and went back the next day to buy more. That day, there was only one left, so I bought it immediately.

I don't think it's very common, but please try your best to find it.

I don't think they take phone reservations. It's Seven-Eleven's chiffon cake.

I used to love buying piroshki from Lawson stores way back when, on winter mornings when it was still dim out, breathing out white clouds of breath as I walked home to eat them with coffee in the kitchen. I still think paper wrappers are the best for things like this.

It was delicious.

I wondered if it might taste more like store-bought goods, but buying one fresh out of the oven while exhaling white breath and eating it in my room with a warm drink makes me incredibly happy.

先日、布製のカレンダーを買いました。

随分昔から雑貨屋さんでたまに見掛けていた、布のカレンダー。

実は私は、カレンダーに直接マジックで予定を書き込んで、1日ごとに斜めの線で数字を消しながら暮しています。

何かに予定を控えて置くと、バタバタしている時にその控えていた物を持ち歩かないし見ないので、色々試した結果、カレンダーに直接書き込むようにしました。

それで全く予定を忘れる事は無くなりました。

部屋のカレンダーがスケジュールボードなんですね。

節約家は、終わった月のカレンダーを破った後、鋏（はさみ）で切って、右上をホッチキスかパンチ、錐（きり）で穴を空けて綴じ（とじ）、使い捨てのメモ帳にしていました。

私も若者の時は、特に疑問に思わずやっていたんですが、その後、意外にメモをする回数と予定や忘備が多く、今でも愛用している分厚いメモ用紙を使うようになりました。

確か10年強前までは、まだカレンダーの手作りメモ帳も同時に使っていたと記憶しています。 

そういうセレクト・ライフですので、布のカレンダーは何故存在しているのだろう？　と長年不思議に思っていました。

私はカレンダーに直接書き込むので、布だと書き込めませんし無理をしても丸印を点けるだけで精一杯だと思っていたんですね。

 

それでも頭の中に残っていた理由は（分からない事の多くは忘れてしまいますよね。）、布製のカレンダーはとても印刷が凝っていて、イギリスやアメリカやフランスの繊細なデザインが多かったからです。

キャラクターの可愛過ぎる物もありましたが、全体的に細かく造り込まれている。

 

元々カレンダーは布だったのだろうか？　とたまに思っていたのですが、2025年になり見掛けてふと購入しました。

届いてみると、すごく素敵で、浪費をしてしまったような秘密を持っている気持ちが治まると、切りっぱなしも生成りの色も、印刷されたフォントもインクの色も、とても柔らかくインテリジェントで買って良かったと思いました。

 

今日の日曜版を書くに当たり、昨日検索してみたんですが、いつ頃から存在していた、という記録は残っていても、何故布にカレンダーを印刷、又は刺繍したのか、という答えはネットにありませんでした。

昔からのデザイン定型に、数字カレンダーとデザインの組み合わせがあるのだろう、と私の中で不明への納得を着地させました。

 

そういえば、小さい頃も何かの図柄にカレンダーがくっ付いていたのを見ていた体感があります。

 

実用を加える為なのか、それとも数字の羅列の12ヶ月分の集合が、非常にデザイン的に優れているのか。私としては後者を採ります。

数字は冷たいとか詰まらない、味気ないと、何か数字に恨みでもあるのか、と数字への普段の言葉は散々ですが、数字自体を画像として見てみると、とても洒落ていてクールで洗練された図案ですよね。

素っ気ない所が非常に前衛的でもあって、HIP（クールで最高なもの）が持つジリっとした熱を、冷んやりと数字の線が伝えて来ます。

 

このタイプの布製カレンダーは、数年前から日本でも爆発的人気を誇っていたそうで、韓国でもお馴染みの人気タイプなんだそうです。

 

何故造られたのか分からないけれど、何百年と経過した現在でも、壁に釘を打ち付けて飾った布製カレンダーを眺めていると、「好い物だな」という実感だけが正確に伝わってきます。

これがデザインの力というモノかもしれません。

 

来年のカレンダーは決めましたか？

Since it's Sunday, I'm writing something gentle.

 

The other day, I bought a fabric calendar.

It's the kind of fabric calendar I'd occasionally spot at variety stores for ages.

Truth is, I write my schedule directly on the calendar with a marker, crossing off each day's number with a diagonal line as I go.

When I jotted things down elsewhere, I'd forget to carry or look at those notes during hectic times. After trying various methods, I settled on writing directly on the calendar.

Since then, I've never forgotten an appointment.

My room's calendar is my schedule board.

 

The penny-pincher would tear off the calendar for the past month, cut it with scissors, punch holes in the top right corner with a stapler or awl, bind it together, and turn it into a disposable memo pad.

When I was young, I did this without thinking much of it, but later, I found I took notes and made appointments or reminders surprisingly often. I started using thick memo paper, which I still love to this day.

I distinctly remember using both the handmade memo pad and the calendar together until a little over ten years ago.

Given this selective lifestyle, I'd long wondered why fabric calendars even existed.

Since I write directly on calendars, fabric ones were unusable for writing. Even if I forced it, I could only manage to mark things with dots.

Still, the reason it stuck in my mind (I forget most things I don't understand, right?) was that fabric calendars often featured very intricate printing, with delicate designs from places like England, America, and France.

Some had overly cute characters, but overall, they were meticulously crafted.

I occasionally wondered if calendars were originally made of fabric. Then, in 2025, I spotted one and impulsively bought it.

When it arrived, it was absolutely lovely. Once the feeling of having made a secret splurge subsided, I realized the raw edges, the natural fabric color, the printed font, and the ink color were all so soft and intelligent—I was glad I bought it.

While writing today's Sunday edition, I searched online yesterday. While records exist of when they first appeared, I couldn't find an answer online for why calendars were printed or embroidered onto fabric.

I settled on an explanation for myself: perhaps it's a longstanding design convention, a combination of a numerical calendar and a design element.

Come to think of it, I distinctly remember seeing calendars attached to some kind of pattern when I was little.

Is it to add practicality? Or is the collection of twelve months' worth of numbers themselves exceptionally well-designed? Personally, I lean towards the latter.

I usually have nothing but harsh words for numbers—cold, dull, tasteless—as if I hold some grudge against them. But when viewed as images, they form incredibly stylish, cool, and sophisticated patterns, don't they?

Their stark simplicity is also highly avant-garde. The crisp lines of the numbers convey the cool, intense heat that HIP (cool and the best) possesses.

This type of fabric calendar apparently exploded in popularity in Japan several years ago and is also a familiar, popular style in Korea.

I don't know why they were made, but even now, centuries later, when I look at a fabric calendar hung on the wall with a nail, the only feeling that comes through clearly is, “This is a good thing.”

This might be the power of design.
