ステンレスの反射景 / 軽井沢ホテル・さだまさし / Reflections on Stainless Steel / Karuizawa Hotel · Masashi Sada / Sunday edition / 1Cabin

| Light / Temu |
Now that we’re into June, the sky has completely transformed into a gradient of stainless steel.
On sunny days, it takes on the clear, white hue of summer I remember from long ago, but on cloudy days or when light rain falls, it looks as if the color of fog has risen into the sky—a metallic shade like stainless steel with a tangible depth. It’s been a month of repeatedly recalling the moment just before a storm, when a dark foreboding of thunder fills the air, and the pulsating sea surface, sliced by concrete as it waits for a typhoon.
The lamp in the photo is one I’ve introduced here before; it’s a beautiful way to display a cluster of celestial bodies in the room.
It used to be in my bedroom, but it was too bright for my eyes, so even though I had several lined up, I only ever turned one on. I always felt that was a waste, so during this major rearrangement, I took the plunge and placed it by the window.
Now, it really brings out the 1Cabin vibe, and I’m very satisfied.
Now that I’ve placed this light there, I keep it on even during the day, and on sunny days, the sunlight beautifully reflects off the white celestial bodies engraved inside the crystal.
In a way, the celestial bodies are here, illuminating the sky and the view from my window on a daily basis, and on sunny days, the sky in turn reflects its light back onto these tiny celestial bodies.
I’m not very good at redecorating, and I used to believe that simply rearranging furniture rarely changes a living space dramatically. However, after getting advice from people knowledgeable about architecture, I took the plunge and made a large piece of furniture—which had just been sitting there—the centerpiece of my interior. As a result, my home has turned into a book café.
My home has turned into a book café. It’s the Sunday edition—it’s hot out there, isn’t it? Let’s get through the summer by staying hydrated and eating plenty of Asian food. Professor O. was beaming with delight. (I personally would have preferred something a bit more substantial, but seeing Enamel’s excitement made me reconsider. —by Prof. O.)
There is plenty of music about butterflies, but watching this beautiful visitor leisurely survey the garden with the lovely name in June 2026, I realized that light itself is the sound of butterflies.
I had been feeling quite down, wondering, “Could something have happened? There hasn’t been any major construction work around here,” so I was truly relieved.
Due to sudden changes in my life, I’ve been behind on “Dance With Science,” but now that I can finally get back to it, I feel full of a sense of having made progress.
I’m a fan of “Chinoiserie”—the East Asian design style as seen by Europeans, including China at the time—but this piece feels a bit closer to the aesthetic of Japan, where I live.
Are the flowers apricots and the bird a great spotted woodpecker?
With this case, if you slide your thumb under the illustration, the top lid springs open, allowing you to remove a single cigarette.
It’s very easy to use. It’s made of aluminum, so it’s lightweight and easy to handle.

| Matchbox / Fighting Fish / Temu |
The term “fighting fish” might give the impression of something a bit aggressive, but I’ve loved them since I was young because they’re so beautiful—they look like celestial maidens in the water.
In fact, I’ve heard there’s actually a breed of betta fish named “Celestial Maiden.”
The reason they’re called “fighting fish” is that they start fighting when kept in groups, so they’re typically kept alone.
I’ve kept them before; they’re a docile breed with a lively, graceful demeanor. Back then, I had a blue fighting fish.

I plan to use it as a stylish little accessory to complement my “Moonlight Beauty” (cactus).
I don’t think I’ll be back to my regular bar-hopping routine until next year, but I’m already looking forward to quietly enjoying these playful patterns on small smoking accessories all by myself at the bar—even if no one else will notice.
This is one of them.
Placing items like these in the room or in the garden—which has such a lovely name—creates a very college-like, calm, and intellectual atmosphere.
I imagine all my favorite rain scenes there.
Have a wonderful Sunday.

The other day, while walking through my neighborhood, I overheard a couple out on their day off talking about how they’d be getting a bonus this year.
It seems that young people these days don’t even know what a bonus is, and they were talking about it with such surprise and delight that it warmed my heart to think our country has finally begun to emerge from a long, long period of darkness.
It made me realize, for the umpteenth time since I was first taught the concept, that this is what the feeling of “Oldman Ship” is all about.

As I packed their items into bags, they spoke with a look of wonder yet quiet joy, their cheeks flushed with a youthful, refreshing glow, saying that they felt their superiors at work had high expectations of them.
Even if I keep responding with silence, they insist with that strange, gentle look in their eyes, “No, you’re surely forcing yourselves. There’s no shame in being true to yourself. Be braver.” But I always shrug my shoulders slightly inside, thinking, “That’s just you guys; other people are different.”
I just smile wryly and think, “What you’re clinging to is just a ‘true self’—not the ‘true self’ that lasts forever, but simply a ‘true self’ based on a misunderstanding from the very beginning. And there’s no ‘true self’ destination waiting at the end of that ‘true self’ path.”
Also, claiming to be “just as you are” is pretty brazen, isn’t it?
People who are mistaken—who insist that being “just as you are” means putting on a show, lying, or putting on airs—talk until they’re blue in the face, while those who quietly adopt role models and do as they please are hunted down with a fierce glare.
It has to be “just as you are.” It has to be ‘just as you are.’ ‘Just as you are,’ ‘just as you are,’ ‘just as you are’—you say that because department stores have better quality, right? Because department stores have better quality, you keep saying ‘just as you are,’ ‘just as you are.’
You’re saying that you don’t need to change a thing and that you’re fine just as you are.
We make various changes along the way as we identify our shortcomings and determine what’s necessary at each moment, but you lot just stay exactly the same, claiming, “This is who I am”—it’s the height of audacity.

Long after I’ve already left,
“I’m fine just the way I am,” and make no effort to change.
I find the audacity of those who, without being asked, barge into the forward-looking field of vision of people who are quietly enjoying what they find wonderful—dressed and behaving as if they were still in kindergarten—and declare, “This is what a high-quality human being looks like,” to be utterly shameless.
I find their audacity to be utterly brazen.
It is precisely these people who, when they see young people rejoicing over bonuses—saying, “Wow, this is amazing, I’m so happy!”—and seeing us feel happy for them, can only think, “That’s just because you’ve gotten old.”

But whenever that time of year rolled around, I’d find myself feeling a bit giddy and happy, even though it had nothing to do with me.
I suppose it was a sense of admiration for those who had chosen a different path—one where bonuses were a reality—and a feeling for the warmth of the economic currents that flow through society.
I still believe that was a very important asset during my youth.
Later, bonuses ceased to be the norm; the era when three months’ pay was standard was forgotten, and one month’s pay became the standard bonus amount. The very word “bonus” faded away, and a long—far too long—and painful era enveloped our society.
The joy of being tired from work, that intellectually fulfilling sensation of moving toward that wonderful sense of exhaustion that awaits after preparing at home.
When you know such things, whether you’re a young adult or a teenager, there must be a refreshing, dignified quality—a kind of “old man-ship” that is, at its core, friendship.
Like a gem I unwittingly acquired at the start of early summer.
To me, the scent of that gem is the scent of flowers.
Well then, I hope you have a wonderful Sunday.

I used to keep short potted plants on my balcony, which offers a nice view, but after I suffered from heatstroke and my life suddenly became hectic, I decided to replace them with taller potted plants once they started to wither.
Now it looks like a hedge, and I really like it.
It serves as a nice privacy screen.
It was a revelation to realize why I’d never broken away from the standard practice of lining up small plants in spaces like this.
I suppose the environment just isn’t suitable for geraniums.
That said, whenever I see someone from the street who has grown an overflowing number of geraniums that glow a dazzling red on their balcony with the same view, it feels like the sunlight and other environmental conditions aren’t all that different.
Thanks to that, a living hedge has even formed on my balcony, making my little 1Cabin look very stately.
A few days ago, I wrote that I wanted to really dive into Harry Styles’ new album (Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally.), but I got swept up in my busy schedule and completely forgot about it.
Then, I saw a scene on an American TV show where Harry Styles appeared to a round of applause praising his new album, so I hurriedly started listening. It turns out my senses were actually duller a few weeks ago—I’m stunned to realize just how incredibly great this album is.
I felt the same way when I watched the performance of “FYA” on Netflix’s BTS comeback live, but the world-building in Harry Styles’ “Are You Listening Yet?” is also incredibly refined, elegant, and brimming with intelligence.
Are noble clubs becoming popular among young people and teenagers these days?
If there’s one in the city where I live, I’d like to sneak in before it gets too crowded.
I wonder if there’s one at the Ritz-Carlton?
I found “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally.” on iTunes for just over 1,800 yen, so I bought it right away with my allowance.
Right now, I’m obsessed with “Are You Listening Yet?”, “American Girls,” “Pop,” and “Dance No More.”

To me, everyone seems to be relaxing and enjoying themselves before the 2026 Rainsy Season.
As I walk out into the cool evening air, taking precautions against the heat, I find myself thinking that if I had a little more stamina and things were a bit more laid-back, I’d love to have a can of beer outside. (Let’s remember to take our trash home and keep the noise down.)
I’ve heard that back in the days when Japan was experiencing rapid economic growth, people would gather on terraces in the evenings—as the night began to brighten—sipping drinks and squinting in the cool summer breeze.
I think that sense of comfort—that the growing cheerfulness of the realists is a form of relaxation—would fit right in with the streets of 2026.
So this year, I plan to look for a beer garden that’s a bit old-fashioned, yet clean and pleasant.
I intend to fully embrace this whim of mine to feel the summer breeze.
Well then, have a wonderful Sunday.
