2026/10/04

Fall/Winter 2026 Flower Schedule / Sunday edition / 1Cabin

FUK Blanche City

Since it’s Sunday, I’m writing something gentle.

Now that we’re into October, the mornings and evenings have become much more pleasant.
In my neighborhood in FUK Blanche City, where I live, there are many foreign residents. When I walk at night, I see them strolling cheerfully in the cool air, each going about their business amid the subtle bustle that reflects the warmth of daily life.

With Chuseok (the Korean Lunar New Year) and the Mid-Autumn Festival (the Chinese and Taiwanese Lunar New Year) now over, both international tourists and residents have returned. As I gaze at the peaceful evening life amidst the unique exoticism of FUK Blanche City—where nationalities blend together—I’m filled with a deep sense of emotion, thinking, “We truly live in a wonderful era.”

The other day, I saw two women wearing very colorful, brocade-patterned saris as formal attire. When I quietly asked them about it, they told me they were taking commemorative photos of each other on the street, and that it was a national holiday in their country that day.

While I naturally speak Japanese in my daily life, I hear languages from various countries as people pass by, which makes me realize that FUK Blanche City has become such a wonderful place to live thanks to inbound tourism.

Since I’ve been feeling the chill more often in the mornings and evenings, I realized I’m finally no longer in mortal danger from the heat—so I immediately ordered seedlings and seeds for fall, winter, and spring from Takii Seed Co., Ltd.’s online store.

It’s rose season, but due to this year’s extreme heat and the aftereffects of a previous bout of heatstroke, I haven’t been able to tend to them much. In my garden—which has such a lovely name—the German white rose “Iceberg” is thriving.
This variety is renowned as a classic and has reportedly been inducted into the “Hall of Fame.”

A key tip for planning your fall gardening is to visualize what you want your garden to look like in early spring—that vision sets the tone for the start of the season.
I love white flowers and cool-toned (blue-based) blooms, and I enjoy a style that incorporates both vibrant and soft yet showy flowers—whether as part of the scenery in my modest home or as a way to bring my personal sense of style to life.

This time, I ordered the “Pansy Orki Blue Shade” in blue and dark navy, and the “Sakura-kai” variety of wheat carnation—these are mid-spring blooms.
The “Finola” tulips, which come in shades of pink, reddish-purple, and white, along with the snowdrops “Mount Everest” and “Casablanca,” and the “Dutch Iris”—these will bloom through May.

I’ve ordered these for now, and if my budget allows, I plan to add the Christmas rose “Shikibu (large plant)” and “Komachi (large plant),” “Baika Oren,” “Hototogisu ‘Shugetsu’,” “German lily of the valley ‘Albo-striata’,” and a fragrant flowering tree—the Chinese quince.

I wasn’t sure if I could stick with the daily work of maintaining the garden—I wondered if I’d get tired of it along the way—but I’ve been spending each day and each season in a very peaceful way, enjoying the harvest.

Since I’ve chosen a life without children, as I approach middle age, I’ve noticed that advice given to others my age often includes phrases like, I’ve noticed that my advice often includes the words, “It’s harvest time. Enjoy it.”

I used to feel a strange sense of longing, thinking, “That’s something I don’t have.” But now, immersed in the beauty of a garden—an inanimate object—amidst the spray from a small fountain scattering light, as I tend to this garden with its lovely name, I find myself in the midst of a deeply philosophical joke. I realize that when you enter this phase of life, you can grasp such richness—and I feel as though I’m holding that abundance in both hands.

I suppose for some people, the “zone of life” begins around their mid-40s, doesn’t it?

Well then, I hope you have a wonderful Sunday that smells like wine.
