LIFEWORK

Master A  Aki&Yuuさん)

(by Prof.O. Master A  Aki&Yuuさん)

Prof.O.

About 20 years ago, I first came across the term “desire for approval” in a light-hearted online news article.
It explained that it refers to the desire for others to approve of you, and while I thought, “Oh, I see,” I was left with nothing but a strange sense of unease.
Simply put, the article described it as someone who wants to stand out but also hates being looked down upon as a “show-off”—in other words, someone who wants to be liked by others very, very much, or the desire itself.

That term and its meaning stuck with me firmly, and I kept thinking, “That’s weird, isn’t it?” It was as if a piece of masking tape printed in italic script had been stuck diagonally across the word, and it stayed there forever.

Then one day, it seems something called Instagram was launched.
It was created by the founder of Twitter (now X) as a side project.
I was still struggling to keep up with Twitter, so I wondered how on earth to use Instagram—especially since it had just appeared out of nowhere. Sure, signing up was free just like Twitter, but was it even different from a blog to begin with? Around that time, I also found myself wondering, “Is it finally okay to talk about YouTube now, even though everyone’s pretending not to notice it?”

Anyway, assuming high school girls would be well aware of such things, a writer or reporter interviewed one, and she replied, looking very, very sad,
“If I tell people, they say, ‘Huh? You’re on Instagram? You’re way too desperate for validation!’ so I do it in secret.”

That’s what was written. Are you okay? If you become a victim, don’t hesitate to call the police! (by Enamel Prof. O. Master A, Aki & Yuu)

Ever since then, from this side of the screen, I’ve come to hate the phrase “desire for approval” with every fiber of my being. I decided that if I ever actually ran into someone using that phrase in real life—whether passing them on the street or sitting next to them—and heard them mocking the account holder or the person posting, I’d seriously call them out on it.
So far, I haven’t met anyone like that.

Of course, I’ve never used it on anyone myself.
I’ve never once used the phrase “desire for approval” when addressing another person.

What a horrible phrase, isn’t it?
I’ve sometimes found myself quietly wondering, “Who on earth would actually say something like that?”
It’s not because I’m overly sensitive—but doesn’t that phrase make you picture the face of a truly unpleasant person?
Someone whose eyes can’t quite hide their anger, but whose mouth is forced into an unnaturally wide smile as they say, in a joking tone, “Your need for validation is way too strong!” Right?

Would you really say that? (by Prof. O. Master A, Aki & Yuu)

Would you really say something like that to someone who says, “I’m on Instagram”?
If you’re the kind of person who says things like that, you should keep your comments to a minimum, even in casual groups.

As of 2026, the term “desire for recognition” is used widely as a convenient way to describe a strong desire to be acknowledged by others.
But every time I come across that phrase online, I brace myself a little and hold my breath, wondering, “Does the person using this phrase right now harbor a dark, hateful feeling toward those who are exploring ways to share their thoughts, create, and express themselves…?” Each time, I’m relieved to find that, “No, that’s not the case,” and I read their posts with a sense of relief.

Every single time, the phrase “desire for approval” makes me feel truly disgusted… it leaves me with a deep sense of unease, time and time again.
On a whim, I decided to look it up on Google.
The desire for recognition refers to the innate, natural human need to “be recognized by others”
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow’s Five-Stage Theory of Needs
and to “be recognized as a valuable person.” It is a natural desire that humans are born with.

It is a feeling that everyone possesses, and in work and study,

Physiological Needs
it serves as a driving force that boosts motivation.

Among the various ways humans gather information to affirm themselves—a sense of self-worth that we’re born with (otherwise we’d stop living immediately)—
it seems that relying solely on information from those around us is described as “desire.”
Wouldn’t it be fine to simply call this innate mental state—the ego that affirms the self—a “sense of self-worth”?

The most well-known psychological theory regarding the need for recognition is Abraham Maslow’s “Theory of Self-Actualization (Hierarchy of Needs).”
Maslow categorized human needs into five levels. The need for recognition (need for esteem) is placed at the fourth level, and it is believed that once this need is satisfied, individuals can move on to the highest level: the “need for self-actualization.”

▶ [5. Need for Self-Actualization] (Wanting to realize one’s full potential)

[4. Need for Recognition (Dignity)] ★Here! (Wanting to be recognized by others, wanting to recognize oneself)

[3. Social Need (Belonging and Love)] (Wanting to be accepted by friends and groups, wanting to avoid loneliness)

[2. Need for Safety] (Wanting to ensure health, financial stability, and physical and mental safety)

[1. Physiological Needs] (Instinctive needs for survival, such as sleep, appetite, and excretion)

“I don't know who Maslow is.”
(by Prof. O. Master A, Aki & Yuu)

The ultimate goal, according to Maslow’s theory, is to achieve self-actualization—or simply to do what you want to do.

As I’ve mentioned in other posts, I applied for a studio worker position a long time ago and was the only one hired out of 40 applicants, so I think I have the right to say this.
That means I was already at the highest level of Maslow’s theory of self-actualization way back then.

So what?
There are plenty of people better than me, aren’t there? — Enamel

Maslow says that having the hairstyle you like is a need, so if you go to a salon, get a great hairstyle, and feel satisfied, that means you’ve achieved self-actualization after fulfilling your need for recognition, right?

Two Types of the Desire for Recognition
・ Desire for recognition from others: The desire for external rewards, such as wanting to be noticed by others or receiving praise on social media.
・ Desire for self-approval: The desire to affirm oneself based on one’s own standards—such as wanting to acknowledge one’s own efforts or maintain self-esteem. ←freee +1
Causes of an Increased Desire for Approval
・ Low self-esteem: Because one cannot recognize one’s own worth, one ends up relying on the evaluations of others.
・ The proliferation of social media: The number of “likes” and followers is quantified and visible, creating an environment where people are constantly concerned about how others perceive them.

How to Get Along Well with Others
・ Think about what you want to do, rather than what others think of you.
・ Every day, find things you can do now that you couldn’t do in the past.

“Everyone’s managing just fine without having to get along perfectly, aren’t they?!” Prof. O.

Rippling-Water-on-Green-Tiles  Photo by  minami  from Studio.Stock
In any case, Maslow was the proponent of a psychological theory that categorizes human needs. The term “need for recognition” itself didn’t need to be forced into the public consciousness like that—isn’t it only natural to feel happy when you receive positive reactions from others for the efforts you’ve made or the actions you’ve taken?

Also, even on social media, it’s only natural to be happy when you receive positive feedback after posting something, and to hope for a positive response.
Sometimes, people use a private, locked account—one not visible to anyone—as a digital repository for their own creations, but if they choose to make something public, it’s only natural to be happy if they receive positive feedback within a range that feels comfortable to them.

Since the term “need for recognition” is commonly used these days, I understand that most people don’t mean anything by it.

However, the term itself implies that the only thing that matters is the evaluation from others—that one simply wants to be approved of. Even though it’s a spontaneous act of sharing, it inherently contains a dependency on others from the very beginning. It’s purely passive.
By labeling it a “desire,” it smacks of arrogance. The term “desire for approval” carries a nuance that implies a rather uncommon psychological distortion—the desire to be liked more and more by others, doesn’t it?

Why go out of your way to dig up Maslow’s psychological framework and claim that web content creators inherently possess a strong dependence on others—including this “desire for approval”—from the very start? What exactly are you trying to do to all personal media account holders?

On a personal note, I intend to run a web magazine here.
Even with the homepage-style site I ran before this, I intended to run a web magazine.
To be precise, a homepage and a blog are essentially the same thing.
Is it really that unusual for an individual to publish content from the amateur fringes?
Instead of a monetary return on investment, I look at page views as my return; I collect data on what I’m publishing and use it to improve my next update—how on earth is that
“g-r-e-e-d”?

That’s all I have to say: your understanding of the term “desire for recognition” is wrong.
Enamel

It’s Master A.
It’s been since Thanksgiving, hasn’t it? How are you doing? I’m doing fine, too.
I really can’t stand this need for validation.
That’s why I asked Enamel to write this, even though it was a bit of a stretch.
What’s this about “validation”? What’s this “need” anyway?
Don’t worry about it. Just do whatever you want. Self-actualization comes from taking action.
I’m majoring in psychology. I’m not wrong about this.
Thanks, Google AI.  Master A

This is Prof. O.
I absolutely hate this kind of pseudo-psychology.
“Give it a rest with the lies,” as my junior once said.
Even without analyzing all this, you wake up in the morning, wash your face, and put on the clothes you like, don’t you?
That is self-actualization.
*The Sorrows of Young Werther* isn’t about moping over such things; it describes a journey of intense contemplation where Werther struggles to determine his stance in life (the very thing Enamel often refers to as one’s “position”).
Yet they go so far as to label that as “Werther-style thinking” rooted in a baser desire for validation.
Are they out of their minds?!
This is all a lie.
Please don’t worry about it.
If you all just quietly and joyfully share the things you love, we’ll cross paths someday and some wonderful chemistry will happen.
I used to call this the “Spark of Silence” and considered it a very good thing. That hasn’t changed.
