Yasuko Agawa and the Automatic White Noise Generation Method / 1Cabin

I let my guard down, thinking the shock had subsided, and took it easy—only to find myself feeling incredibly down and sensitive, and I was stunned to realize there was a tremendous amount of anger building up inside me.

So, does that mean I usually have those feelings inside me without realizing it? Actually, it seems that’s not the case.
Most likely, while I was still reeling from the intense shock, the emotions I normally feel—anger, overly hyper cheerfulness, sadness, and chest pain—were amplified about 50 times and came pouring out. Even as I thought to myself, “Huh? Wait a minute…?” I couldn’t stop it.
The only saving grace was that I let it all out in a room where no one else was around.

This morning, I realized, “Whoa, I haven’t recovered at all,” so I took a pain reliever (Bufferin, in my case) and, since I had the day off, spent the entire afternoon lying down.
After that, I took a shower and decided to stay even quieter than usual, sticking strictly to tasks that fall within my own scope and simple chores I could do right in my room.
It seems it would have been better not to listen to much music, either.
Of all nights, last night I listened to Seiko Matsuda’s songs, and for some reason, my chest felt incredibly tight, and I was so moved that I started tearing up.
At times like this, it seems even things that move me are off-limits.

To summarize:
1. Keep my emotions in a state that’s slightly more detached than usual.
2. Avoid laughing too much, crying, or getting overly emotional; stay away from moving stories or topics, as well as heartwarming, humanistic stories or topics.
3. If someone starts telling a painful or heartbreaking story—one that makes me feel gloomy and depressed just by listening—it’s okay to suddenly get up, interrupt them, or hang up the phone.

This is just my personal opinion, but I believe that any emotion that arises when we’re exposed to intense feelings—whether joy, anger, sorrow, or excitement; heartwarming or moving stories; or painful and poignant tales—is essentially a form of emotional turmoil.
I think people like that just want to unsettle others so they can experience a strange sense of connection.

And while that person gets to enjoy their own sick little “lucky moment,” I’m left to deal with the unpleasant aftertaste of that emotional turmoil—and I even have to subject myself to unnecessary self-reflection, thinking, “How could I, as an adult, actually cry?”

Yet all that remains is the unpleasant feeling that my precious time was unilaterally consumed by such a person without my consent.

    Does this ring a bell?
Back in elementary school, girls and boys who were usually ignored by others—people with zero conscience—would pull this stunt to get everyone’s attention.

Since what I just described is exactly that, let’s just mutter “I’m busy right now” to ourselves and quickly remove ourselves from that place or situation.

While the spirit of offering sympathy is important, I don’t think there’s any need to let those feelings show in your appearance or attitude—to the point of even shedding tears, which are often seen as proof of being a kind person—or to listen to and relive the pitiful stories of similar incidents from an unrelated past.
That would be disrespectful to the people in the affected regions who are currently receiving messages of sympathy from all over the world, wouldn’t it?

If you’re having trouble deciding, try adding the phrase “Did you hear? Did you hear? Big news!” in your mind at the beginning of the main point that person mentioned.
I think that will help you make up your mind.
Go ahead and be completely aloof—maintain a cooler attitude than usual!

4. Check to see if you’ve been talking more than usual for some reason, and if so, try spending 30 minutes in silence. This will help dispel the subtle but significant emotional turbulence that’s hard to notice.

5. Spend time in a calm and intellectually stimulating environment.

6. Make a conscious effort to use clear, standard Japanese.

Please give these a try if you’d like.

There’s a type of sound called “white noise” that has a relaxing effect. If you’ve already searched through all the free music apps and can’t find any, or if you don’t have any, try turning down the volume on your music slightly and playing it through just your smartphone’s speaker.

If you’re using an iPhone, go to Apps → Music → Equalizer → Boost Bass, then slide the “Auto-Adjust Volume” option just below it to off—this will make the sound closer to white noise.

You’ll hear a slight crackling sound with some noise.
This turns your favorite music, played on that iPhone, into a “white noise version.”
If it doesn’t strain your ears, try playing it for about 30 minutes. If you find yourself thinking, “Huh? This sounds kind of like city street noise or people chatting in a café,” then you’ve probably succeeded.

If you start to feel unwell or get depressed, switch back to your regular speakers.

Good sound contains a lot of information, so your ears, brain, and skin have to process more of it. That’s a good thing, but listening for too long can be tiring.

I don’t recommend using headphones with this automatic white noise generation method.
I don’t think it’s good for your eardrums.

Yasuko Agawa was one of the women I looked up to back in the day.
I remember seeing her in a TV commercial and thinking, “What a wonderful person she is. Could I ever become a woman like her—so elegant, with such a great aura, and seemingly so intelligent?” I’d just stare at her blankly.

My admiration was so strong that I unconsciously copied her album cover in my head. When I had to make a poster for school, I even drew a rough sketch and stayed up late the night before to create a pirated “NIGHT LINE” poster—a complete rip-off—for a school bulletin board, without any copyright permission.

I was praised for it, but to me, it didn’t come close at all. I even went to the record store to double-check, but it was completely different—the colors seemed similar yet were actually far off—and I remember getting incredibly angry at myself, as if it were just yesterday.

A Little Art Museum Underwater / Sunday edition / 1Cabin / I want to be what you saw in me,

Since it's Sunday, I'm writing something gentle.
(I mention the March 11 earthquake and the recent earthquake briefly, but the content is not graphic.)

I’ve finally finished selecting paintings that go well with my current room, and when I laid them out on the table, it looked just like a small art museum, just as I’d planned.
The impromptu redecorating project is finally over, and before I knew it, it was already August.
It was such an unexpected major redecorating project that it really wore me out.

The other day, a major earthquake struck a prefecture near the city where I live. While it wasn’t strong enough to break any furniture, my room shook side-to-side for longer than I realized.
There were also about two aftershocks that day, and perhaps because I was tired and sleep-deprived, it seems this time it really shook me up.
I’ve experienced two major earthquakes in my life so far, so I thought I’d be fine—which is why I was a little surprised.

Since I was feeling so on edge and hypersensitive, I took one Bufferin tablet a day, ate my meals, stayed away from the news, and got my housework done. At night, I’d let out the physical and mental exhaustion by quietly shedding a few tears in my room.

Yesterday, the small painting I’d been planning to get arrived, and the moment I thought, “It’s just like a little art museum,” I suddenly felt a sense of relief.
It seems the shock really did affect me, so I’m relieved that the possibility of PTSD has decreased.

In the book I mentioned here before, *Enjoying Japanese Hospitality at Home* by Chieko Hirota (published by Gijutsu Hyoron-sha), under the section “Changing Your Mood,” it says it’s good to have a spot in your room or home—just this one corner—that’s neatly organized and serves as a display area you love. Once again, I felt deeply that this is truly the case.

When people talk about incorporating small works of art into a room, it can feel unfamiliar and a bit stuffy. But instead of an actual oil painting, I bought a picture I liked on Temu, and even though I haven’t hung it on the wall yet, it’s already made me feel much calmer.

It goes without saying, but there’s absolutely nothing good about having a messy room.
The picture of the crow above is a print, but it’s set in an 8-cm round metal frame.
It feels substantial when I hold it, and it seems to lend an elegant weight to the room’s atmosphere; every time I walk past it, a gentle smile crosses my face.

The painting above—featuring a whale, a woman in a dress, a full moon, and the ocean—looks like it’s made of iron, but it’s actually made of thick cardboard.
It seems to be related to the BTS song “Whalien 52,” which is why I bought it.
For some reason, when I look at this, I get a warm, comforting feeling, as if someone is telling me, “It’s not your fault at all.”

This is a shelf made up of small wooden drawers. I bought it on Temu, as usual.
I seem to really like the furniture available on Temu.
I feel like it adds a noble, classical, and substantial atmosphere to the room, with a touch of Chinoiserie.

Having a few pieces like this in a small room seems to help calm my mind, even when something major happens.
Since we’re in a neighboring prefecture, people from countries where earthquakes are rare might have been startled, but because it’s a neighboring area so far away, we were fine here.

This time, however, I was completely exhausted, my living space remained a mess for ages, and I was constantly sleep-deprived, so the shock really hit me hard.

During the 2011 earthquake—commonly known as “3/11”—even the capital, Tokyo, shook quite violently. Naturally, people working in the media are chronic hard workers, and since the Japanese fiscal year begins on April 1—a different cutoff date from the calendar year that starts on January 1—I imagine many of them were working through sleep deprivation in March.

Furthermore, those involved in news reporting continued their coverage immediately after the disaster and fulfilled their duties under conditions that made it easy to experience psychological shock, so I suspect many of them may have developed PTSD.

Since medication-based treatment is a form of scientific medical care, I sincerely hope that statistics will be compiled—including specific data on dosage levels, the duration of treatment, and the conditions under which patients were able to wean off their medication—and that these individuals will return to the media, even if not in high-profile reporting roles, but rather as observers of the arts, music, performing arts, and everyday life.

I’ve completely recovered from the shock now, and if I continue for about another week with a calm routine of going to bed early and waking up early, along with tidying up and cleaning my home, it looks like I won’t need to consult a doctor.

The atmosphere is often compared to water.
The calm atmosphere of a room is clear and gentle, which is why I chose this as today’s title.

For those who aren’t into that style, even without styling an entire section of the room, wouldn’t collecting a few small paintings like these—which create a quiet, charming atmosphere—help your mind relax peacefully?

Well then, I hope you have a wonderful Sunday.

Since I’ve already had a drink today, I’d like to repost something I shared in the past about the things I usually try to keep in mind after a disaster, when the damage is minimal and cities and towns are functioning as usual.
If you’re feeling on edge, experiencing strong anxiety, or still can’t shake off the tension, please feel free to give it a read.

-----------

It’s impossible not to feel flustered,
but why not try practicing not to let it show in your attitude or facial expressions?

If you make a conscious effort to maintain a composed expression and act with poise, your nerves will eventually settle down.

Try wearing slightly more formal makeup than usual (something stylish, elegant, classic, and vibrant, or chic), style your hair a little more carefully than usual with a generous amount of hair oil for extra shine, and wear a sharp-looking jacket. Even for a woman’s body, aim for a “sergeant” look (apparently this is called “Lady Sergeant.” from Prof.O.)—and try moving with an air of rigid elegance. Even if you’re feeling unsettled, I think you’ll find that your emotions will calm down within about 20 minutes.

When you walk at an unnaturally fast pace and move around frantically, you tend to get increasingly worked up. You start getting angry over the slightest things, feel constantly irritable, and start thinking that unreasonable demands are your birthright.

I love efficient ways of getting things done too, but when you’re in a huge hurry, you don’t usually squeeze past people at a distance so close they instinctively step back, do you?

Over the past few years, whenever news reports air about earthquakes, severe warnings, or the world becoming increasingly unstable and turbulent, I’ve noticed a lot of people walking at an abnormally fast pace, squeezing past others at a distance where they’re practically about to bump into them.

Yesterday (April 1, 2026), there was a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Tochigi in the morning, but in the evening at the supermarket,

I saw a young woman who bumped into my bag and then into the shopping basket I was holding, and just walked right past without even a nod.

I also saw several people standing in the crowded aisles, staring blankly into space; at the trash bin area near the entrance, even though there was plenty of room,

someone came straight toward me—the only person standing there with a shopping cart (couldn’t they have just gone around me?)—and others who didn’t seem to realize how crowded the aisles were, just pushing their way in even more. Even in the aisles, where there was plenty of room to avoid others, people were passing by just inches from my body.

Starting this month, bicycles are subject to traffic tickets, prices are rising, oil prices remain uncertain due to global conditions, and with the start of a new life on April 1st, it’s a season when people are easily unsettled, even aside from earthquakes.

If you practice not letting your unease show in your facial expressions or demeanor, you’ll stop making remarks or taking actions that reveal your confusion to those around you.

There were also people speaking in an oddly hysterical, loud voice; people in suits who seemed unable to distinguish between chatting in a single file in a school hallway and their current situation; and men talking on the phone at a volume that echoed through the buildings on the street.

Even in my town, far from the areas affected by the quake, there were many people who remained in a state of confusion without realizing it.

New menu starting at 2:00 PM
Since Japan is a country prone to earthquakes, those who have experienced a disaster in the past, those who have been startled by strong tremors, or have seen dishes shatter from a strong tremor, may unconsciously experience shock after seeing disaster coverage in the future, becoming hysterical or highly vulnerable. To prevent this shock from affecting your behavior or inner state, why not create an “emergency schedule” to follow after disaster reports air?

After disaster news airs, I spend time quietly. I drink coffee in a serene environment. I buy a few elegant flowers, return to my room, put a kettle on the stove, and arrange the flowers in a small vase to capture the relaxed atmosphere of the evening city. I go to bed early. If necessary, I take a sleep aid. I incorporate these practices—such as avoiding intense news—into my daily routine.

Since today was one of those rainy days I love so much, I ordered omurice and coffee at a quiet café.
This isn’t the view from the window, but the sky as seen from the front of the shop.

That concludes today’s random thoughts (irregular) on times when I feel unsettled.

There are cases where Stockholm syndrome occurs only in the perpetrators .: Today's Random Thoughts (Irregular)

The following contains strong content related to violence, so please feel free to skip this section if you find it distressing.
“Stockholm syndrome also includes a reaction in which the perpetrators alone distort the facts—claiming that their victims were originally allies or acquaintances—as a form of self-escape.”

Please just keep that in mind.
Although it is referred to as a “syndrome” in Japan,

it is not an official diagnostic term for a mental disorder.
(Enamel’s Note: It is not a disease, but a state in which one is unable to cope with reality.)
    From Google AI

Let’s dismiss this as simply a manifestation of the characteristics of someone who has been spoiled, rather than an attempt to frighten you for the sake of it.

Here is the main text.
Stockholm syndrome refers to a reaction in which a victim, primarily in a confined environment, develops a faint sense of camaraderie toward the perpetrator to alleviate their fear, thereby protecting their mental state and weathering that period.

It seems this is not widely known, however.
In Stockholm syndrome, there is also a reaction where the perpetrators themselves distort the facts—claiming they were originally friends or had a relationship with the victim they harmed—as a form of self-escape.

There is a 1975 film called *The Afternoon of the Wolves*.
It’s a movie about a criminal situation (a bank hostage situation), and I watched it when I was younger after someone with a different interpretation recommended it to me.

In fact, this film depicts Stockholm syndrome in a matter-of-fact and accurate manner.
(The following contains spoilers for the movie)

There’s a scene at the end on the runway where the two criminals are arrested and the hostages are freed, but actually, there’s a scene right before that where the hostages begin to cooperate with the criminals.

If I recall correctly, it was the FBI or the military rather than the police, but during a phone negotiation between the two young criminals and a group of socially successful, high-ranking individuals, the hostages start advising the criminals, telling them, “Tell them this!”
The perpetrators hesitate, wondering if they should follow the advice, but when they eventually relay the message, one stage of their hostage demands goes smoothly.

When asked, “Why are you helping us?”
they’re told, “We’ve had a rough time in this world, too. We understand how you feel. We’ll cooperate until you escape. As long as you release us after you’ve escaped, that’s fine with us.”
And so, they end up in a strange partnership.
Despite their skepticism, even the female hostages start saying things like, “People like that—the officials from the negotiation agency—have always been a pain. I’ve been told that myself.”

Eventually, a strange sense of camaraderie begins to take root, and this is where the film truly shines: it depicts the stark contrast in the expressions between the hostages and the young criminals who are cooperating with them.
The young criminals embody passionate human emotion.
“The hope of people who, despite having done something like this, still believe there’s a future where they might be able to start over.”
The hostages, on the other hand, have “an air of near-expressionless dullness, as if a thick, transparent veil were draped over all of them.”

Eventually, after they’re arrested on the runway and the hostages are subsequently released, there’s a scene where the hostages are led away while the hostages watch. The hostages intend to say, “This is where we part ways.” “We never meant to kill you. Sorry for dragging you into this.” That’s the vibe.

In contrast, the hostages who had cooperated with the perpetrators cast exhausted, icy glances or sideways looks at them, then walk away without showing any anger, treating them as mere, unrelated strangers.
The film ends with the young perpetrators being led away, their faces still frozen in shock.

This is an example of the strange sense of closeness and the feeling of camaraderie that perpetrators of Stockholm syndrome feel toward their victims.
While freed hostages are able to return to reality immediately afterward,
the perpetrators not only fail to return to reality but actually react as if they have been betrayed by those very people.

Lima Syndrome is named after a kind of self-destructive behavior in which the perpetrators sympathize with the hostages and release them.
However, Lima Syndrome is not the opposite of Stockholm Syndrome; rather, it is a similar phenomenon.
Furthermore, the term “syndrome” is likely used here because it refers to a transient emotional reaction, much like the flu.

The reality of the society we’ve lived in since childhood is that once a relationship with someone breaks down, there’s no way to make up.

You’ve seen them, haven’t you?
People who break off a relationship themselves, then go out of their way to show up at that very place, force their way into the office, and—no matter how much you try to stop them—insist on “helping” in a bizarre manner.
It’s perfectly fine to call the police.

A columnist I greatly respect once wrote, “In that case, call an ambulance.”
As Enamel—who used to work as a professional emergency operator—I’d like to respectfully add, even though it’s a bit of a needless digression, that you should tell the paramedics, “They seem to be in a state of confusion…” while appearing flustered.
It’s a long-standing social convention.
