The Madonna of Lippi / I want to be what you saw in me / 1Cabin

Creation is The Best!"

Wooden Painting, Suitable for Both Table Display and Wall Hanging, Oval: “Madonna of Lippi” / Don Bosco Co.
I wanted a painting that would complement my room, so I purchased a panel painting of the Madonna by Lippi.
The iron shelf it’s sitting on is something I bought on Temu.

When people think of religious art, some might view it as something akin to advertising posters designed to promote faith.
However, historically, being commissioned to paint ceiling murals in Christian cathedrals and churches or to create paintings and sculptures to hang on the walls of sacred spaces was considered the work of the most accomplished artists in the country at the time. It was also an opportunity to gain patrons among rulers (such as kings and ministers) and wealthy merchants.

A patron to a painter (or artist) was someone who provided the artist with free housing and a studio, as well as clothing, meals, art supplies, and even covered the expenses for research trips to find subjects for paintings and sculptures.

In the Middle Ages, if an artist secured a powerful patron, their talent and success were virtually guaranteed.
Consequently, the painters whose names are still remembered today left behind numerous portraits of their patrons’ families. Since nearly all Western medieval states had Christianity as their state religion, a large number of religious paintings for churches have also been preserved.

Therefore, Christian art is the cornerstone of Western art and is deeply intertwined with its development.

I found Lippi’s Madonna—a small panel painting—on the Don Bosco Company’s online store, liked it, and decided to buy it.
I knew nothing about Lippi’s Madonna, so all I could think was, “Is ‘Lippi’ a place name or a person’s name? And if ‘Madonna’ refers to the Virgin Mary, does that mean it’s a depiction of Mary?”
So, once it arrived, I was looking forward to searching online to find out more.

When it comes to paintings and small objects—the reasons behind their form, their design, and their history—I always make a point of buying them without doing any preliminary research, and then look into them once they’re in my possession.

That’s because, in my experience, it often happens that—even though I didn’t know about them at the time of purchase—once I have them in my hands and look into them, I discover a beauty or culture that holds deep meaning for me, and that I was actually searching for all along, even if I didn’t know its name.

Wooden Painting, Suitable for Both Table Display and Wall Hanging, Oval: “Madonna of Lippi” / Don Bosco Co.

The panel painting of the Madonna by Lippi arrived one afternoon during the rainy season.
It was so beautiful, and since it was my first time seeing a panel painting, I wondered, “Is this the same kind of painting found on the square panels on the ceiling of a Shinto shrine?” Filled with excitement, I searched online and found that it was “The Madonna and Child” by the painter Filippo Lippi.

Since the title of the painting in the Don Bosco Company’s online shop was “Lippi’s Madonna,” I figured that what I had purchased must be a cropped section of the painting titled “The Virgin and Child”—probably adapted so it could be easily displayed in my room.
That’s what I thought, but the description of the painting was completely different.

Also, since I’d been told beforehand by someone knowledgeable about Catholicism that the woman depicted in “Lippi’s Madonna” is the Virgin Mary, I assumed that since it was labeled “The Virgin and Child,” a depiction of the infant Jesus must be painted at this woman’s feet.

I’m an HSP, so I tend to remember images by their general appearance. (It’s pretty much the same with kanji and magazine pages—I remember them by their visual appearance rather than the text itself.)
So, thinking, “Something seems off here,” I looked closely at the photos from the image search and noticed that the ornament on the woman’s forehead (apparently called a “headset”) was silver in the images displayed online.

Huh? The one I have has a black headset, so I wondered if I’d bought the wrong one. I then took a photo of the panel painting in my room with my smartphone, zoomed in on the headset area, and ran another Google image search.
The headpiece is black, after all.

It turns out this painting is supposedly “Battista Sforza,” as depicted in “Portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino” by Piero della Francesca.
But no matter how I look at it, this is a completely different painting with an avant-garde style.
I couldn’t figure out why Piero della Francesca came up in the search results, so I wondered if it was an AI glitch.

Anyway, since the woman in Lippi’s Madonna is wearing a silver headset and the one in my room is wearing a black one, I wondered if I’d accidentally purchased a Madonna from a different panel painting?

Just as I was thinking that,
I realized that, to begin with, you wouldn’t even notice a difference in headset color unless you stared at it really closely.
Feeling embarrassed by my own neuroticism, I decided to keep it to myself—without telling anyone at Don Bosco or anyone else—and quietly tucked it away in my heart as I displayed it.

On another night, I was looking at a photo I’d taken with my smartphone against the light—so that the light wouldn’t shine directly on the surface of the painting—and noticed that the color of the woman’s headset had turned silver.

The headset was silver.
The headset was silver.

——Was this a sign from God?
I panicked a little, but it turned out this painting was designed so that the headset’s color looks different depending on whether it’s in a bright or dark setting.

Madonna wearing a silver headset; photographed in a dark place (backlit)
I suppose this is the upright position of Lippi’s Madonna, with the silver headset.
In that case, this panel painting with a silver headset that appears in Google’s image search results is

an Italian-made panel painting—suitable for both tabletop and wall display—set in a golden oval frame and based on Filippo Lippi’s “Madonna and Child.”

That description in Google’s image search results is definitely correct.
The title listed on Don Bosco’s online shopping site was also correct.

Paintings are generally not meant to be exposed to direct sunlight.
This is because it damages the artwork.
That’s why using a flash is strictly prohibited in museums and galleries.

After all, even panel paintings are almost always displayed indoors.
However, even in countries where rooms without direct sunlight are considered more refined, opening the curtains allows sunlight to enter and shine on the painting.

In this panel painting, Filippo Lippi deliberately painted the headdress so that it appears silver in dark areas and black in bright areas.

Upon further research, I ran a Google image search for “Piero della Francesca,” the artist who painted the Madonna with a black headdress, along with the painting I had on hand, and
the Madonna with the black headdress is
The image you provided is a detail (the head) from the fresco *Saint Mary Magdalene* by the Italian Renaissance master Piero della Francesca.
That’s what it said.
This Madonna with the black headdress was actually Mary Magdalene.
What’s more, Piero della Francesca was the first painter in the world to depict Mary Magdalene!

From the Renaissance through the modern era, Mary Magdalene has been viewed as a great figure, yet one who has also been subject to prejudices that have caused people to frown upon her.
I love Mary Magdalene dearly and hold her in the highest regard.

I have always seen in her a reflection of the fundamental attitude of a creator—her devotion and intellect—and have regarded her as the embodiment of the great power of creation and the mindset of “wanting to share the very best of what I know.”

Considering the historical context, I can imagine that while it was possible to paint Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, it was quite difficult to paint Mary Magdalene.
After all, doing so could have led to excommunication and expulsion from the social community.

That is precisely why Piero della Francesca’s achievement in boldly depicting Mary Magdalene—and his history of following his own creativity, believing that it is only natural to paint what one feels compelled to paint—is a story that stirs our hearts even today.

Lippi likely created this wonderful design as his “Madonna” as a tribute to “Piero della Francesca, the master of the Italian Renaissance.”

The color scheme of Lippi’s headdress follows biblical references: the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ at night, while Mary Magdalene washed Jesus Christ’s feet and anointed them with oil using her hair during the day.

In Lippi’s Madonna, the headdress turns silver in dim light (at night)—as Mary’s hair is golden—and turns black in bright light (during the day). (Mary Magdalene’s hair is black.)

Depicting both the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene under the single name “Maria” struck me—someone who has often used the hip-hop artistic technique of double meanings in my writing—as an even stranger coincidence.

People who realized the significance of this small panel painting have continued to create Lippi’s Madonna ever since—a magnificent work depicting the Virgin Mary in prayer, with her appearance differing between light and dark areas—and one such panel painting has now found its way into my room.

The traces of Spinoza’s dance that I discovered in June brought me a sense of exhilaration. “Creation is The Best!”

This is O.
It’s quite a story, isn’t it?
I was surprised. Really surprised.
What is it with Enamel, anyway?
Why do I keep winning things like this?
When I asked her, she said she has unusually good luck with raffles. Ever since she won second prize—an expensive jigsaw puzzle—on her very first try as a child, she’s been too scared to enter them very often.

Actually, I used to take art lessons. So I know this—it’s called a “hidden image.”
It’s a technique where a different image is hidden within a single painting, giving a charming wink only to the person who owns it.
I’m so glad you bought it, Enamel!

I feel like this is an anthem for people living their everyday lives today.
I like the version by Lizzo and SZA.
I’d love to see the three of them—including Whoopi Goldberg—sing it together.
Enamel

I don’t usually listen to songs like this, but I think it’s a perfect fit for this story about Madonna that Lippy shared.

Shop pauline

" I want to be what you saw in me "

なので今日の日曜版は " I want to be what you saw in me "第一回目でもあります。

Puline Laudate

    Google AI

Wall-Mounted Silver-Framed “Our Lady of Guadalupe” / Shop Pauline
Since it’s Sunday, I’m writing something gentle.

As I mentioned in my previous message, please be sure to try the simple moulfe.
Starting with this Sunday edition, I’ve added a new category.
“I want to be what you saw in me”
(I want to become what you saw in me)

Apparently, this is a message from a Banksy mural on a lighthouse.
I plan to use this phrase as a sign of respect and homage, mainly when writing about art.
This is because I’ve become interested in medals, which has sparked my curiosity about art and artworks in general.

So today’s Sunday edition also marks the first installment of “I want to be what you saw in me.”
Since moving into my current apartment, I’ve often found myself wanting to hang a painting in my room.

But I couldn’t find anything I really liked, and just as I was thinking about commissioning an artist to paint something for me, I bought some medals.
That reminded me to search online—I wondered, “Maybe there are wall hangings or tabletop paintings available?”
I looked into it and found some pieces I really liked, so I’ve purchased a few.

The photo above is “Wall-Hanging with Silver Frame: Our Lady of Guadalupe.”
Since I have yellow skin, I felt a strong connection to this Virgin Mary, who has brown skin.

This is the Virgin Mary who appeared in Mexico; it is said that in December 1531, she appeared before a man named Juan Diego in Tepeyac, on the outskirts of Mexico City.

Juan Diego went to see the bishop, but the bishop did not believe him. On the contrary, he told him to ask the Virgin Mary for some kind of proof.
When he relayed this to the Virgin Mary, she told him to bring roses blooming all over the hill. Then she said, “I am the Virgin who protects this land. Call me Guadalupe.”
He hurriedly cut many of those roses and wrapped them in his cloak. In front of the bishop, he opened his cloak and showed him the roses. Not only was it a miracle that roses were blooming in the middle of winter, but these roses were a variety found only in Spain. Furthermore, imprinted on the inside of his cloak was the image of the Virgin Mary—with the same brown complexion and black hair as the one he had encountered.
This image of the Virgin Mary that appeared on Juan Diego’s cloak is known as the “Our Lady of Guadalupe.”

Additionally, according to Google AI search results:

The image of the Virgin Mary depicted on the cloak blends Christian teachings with symbols from Mesoamerica (ancient cultures such as the Aztecs).
Brown skin and black hair: These represent her approachability as a figure who stands alongside the indigenous people.
Stars and cloak: The blue-green cloak is studded with stars from the night sky, signifying her divine nature.
Crescent moon at her feet: This symbolizes Coyolxauhqui, the Aztec goddess of the night, and signifies that she transcends the ancient gods.

To be honest, my knowledge of Western art is limited to Raphael, Rembrandt, and the Impressionists; beyond that, I’m familiar with sculptural art like Ogihara Rokuzan and white porcelain, as well as modern art such as avant-garde and illustration.

Since these medallions feature the styles of Raphael and Michelangelo, and are a size that’s easy to display, I thought I’d try incorporating them into my room’s decor.

Since the medal happens to have a style reminiscent of Raphael or Michelangelo, and it’s a manageable size, I decided to incorporate it into my room’s decor.

Here in Japan, where I live, paintings are often cited as one of the hardest things to give as gifts. And it’s true—if you give someone a painting without knowing their taste in interior design, they’ll be at a loss as to what to do with it.

But wouldn’t that not be the case if you’ve visited their home at least once?
In TV dramas and manga, there’s always a scene set in modern times where someone receives a painting that doesn’t match their room and is left at a loss—I wonder why that is.
It’s a sign of the decline in the value placed on the person giving the painting, isn’t it?

Tabletop Painting: The Madonna of Rippi / Don Bosco Publishing
This is a tabletop painting of the Madonna by Lippi, which I’ll discuss in more detail in my next post.
It’s one of my favorite paintings, and at this size, it didn’t get in the way at all.

In movies and TV shows, the examples of what goes wrong usually involve paintings that are abnormally large, don’t they?
You can’t just buy something like that, and besides, nobody actually lives in a room with enough space to display such a huge painting, so it’s just a stereotypical portrayal.

Also, if you receive a painting as a gift, you can display it during the season depicted in the painting or the season you received it—perhaps during your annual redecorating.

This creates a new tradition of sending a postcard to the person who gave it to you, saying, “I displayed it again this year,” and it creates a moment of quiet connection with the giver through the painting.

    Medai: Mary, Immaculate Conception
As for the Medai, while it might be commonplace overseas, I think it would make a great gift.
It works well as a lucky charm, and as a small work of art, wouldn’t it make a special present?

The after-school gift scene from Reijin V’s “Would you like to have coffee with me?” commercial—which went viral around the world—is a familiar one.
With its unpretentious feel, even if you just gently set it on the table at a coffee shop, it looks like a scene straight out of a movie, doesn’t it?

I think the season that suits it best is the dead of winter.
It feels like a quiet winter afternoon—around 3 or 5 o’clock—with church bells ringing in the distance.

I’m sure that in everyday gift-giving situations, even without any wrapping, a medallion would be perceived as a very quiet and respectful gift, wouldn’t it?

Someday, when I look back on that day,
my heart will surely warm at the thought that this person handed me a tiny work of art—one that fits in the palm of my hand—from the Christian art that laid the foundation for Western art.

You can proudly introduce it to new people, and if they’re interested, you could even go to church together to offer it as a return gift.
And choosing a new medal or other religious item is such a heartwarming moment, isn’t it?

Among the many depictions of the Virgin Mary and the saints, one of them is surely the one that person believes will definitely protect you.

Every time you hold that small work of art, the image of that person and that figure flickers in the chamber of your memory—it’s a quiet yet clear sign that, as a good friend, they are delighted to have met you.

Well then, I hope you have a wonderful Sunday filled with thoughts of winter.

The Michael Jackson movie is out now, isn’t it?
There are many Michael Jackson songs I like, but I also really love “Butterflies.”
Every time I listen to it, I wonder if he’s singing about his two children—and it makes me feel really warm inside.

As for the movie “Michael,” it’s well known that the production team behind “Bohemian Rhapsody”—the film that chronicled Queen’s journey—is behind it.
I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m really looking forward to it.

Just like with “Bohemian Rhapsody,” I hear that “cheer screenings” are being held all over Japan starting on June 25, the anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death.

According to Google AI search results,
the rules for United Cinemas’ tribute screenings allow
cheering, clapping along to the music, bringing in towels or glow sticks, and attending in Michael Jackson cosplay.
However, excessive cosplay that obstructs the view of others, jumping that disturbs other patrons, and the use of noisemakers are prohibited.
