We’re now in the latter half of July, and the prices of yukata are starting to drop.
There was a time when I felt I had to buy a new yukata every year before summer, so even now, talking about yukata and traditional Japanese clothing makes me feel cheerful.
Strangely enough, I feel like a glamorous atmosphere seems to fill the room.
It’s quite interesting to wonder if this is a phenomenon that happens when I’m researching traditional Japanese clothing on my computer or smartphone here in Japan, where I live.
Please try it out in your own room in your country. (lol)
It’s probably because in Japan, formal wear for women is also traditional Japanese attire.
With that in mind, today’s Sunday edition will be a two-part series.

The series is streaming on Disney+, and according to official news from Disney+,
In addition, “SHOGUN” was the most-watched series on Disney+ in Japan last year.
(As of January 6) Enamel Note: As of 2025The drama series *SHOGUN*, starring Hiroyuki Sanada, has won a Golden Globe Award! It took home a record four awards, including Best Television Series! Starting January 6, 2025
It was a shame I couldn’t watch it because the depictions were too graphic for me, but even though it’s a fictional story set in the Warring States period, the costumes, visuals, and props were truly beautiful.
While yukata are summer wear compared to traditional Japanese attire—such as the kimonos worn in spring and fall (known simply as “awase”)—if you wear a long underkimono (nagajuban) underneath—which has the same shape and length as a kimono—and then put the yukata over it, you’ll have no problem wearing it even at a restaurant or a chic bar.

If you’re walking around wearing a yukata paired with a nagajuban, along with an obi and tabi, and are reprimanded for it in Japan or in the country where you live, please take the time to email Enamel.
We’ll consult with a professional in traditional Japanese attire and get back to you.
The reason I’m stating this so definitively is that, while I imagine those of you who read my regular Sunday column are quietly chuckling, it’s safe to say that even in Japan, there is virtually no one who would accuse someone wearing a yukata over a juban of violating the dress code.
I’m no expert, but there was a time when I believed there was no reason why traditional Japanese clothing couldn’t be worn as everyday attire, so I actually spent time wearing it around the house and when going out, just wandering about.

Clothing evolves to suit current circumstances and the wearer’s needs so as not to burden them, yet there are people who loudly insist on rules that are like fossils—stuck in the past because they’re no longer practiced. I believe this is a kind of shock state caused by their insecurities.
“You don’t go out on rainy days wearing geta with leather covers on them, do you, just because you’re afraid your kimonos will get wet?”
Naga-juban: Originally, a kimono worn under a patterned kimono. It is often made of lightweight fabric. It is famous for the white collar that peeks out from the collar area—called the “tamoto”—of a patterned kimono. Its formal name is “han-eri.”
In contrast, an “iro-eri” (colored collar) is created by cutting the white threads of the white “uwano” fabric on the white collar section with scissors to unravel it, then removing the han-eri.
Afterward, a rectangular piece of patterned fabric is sewn on top in the same manner, allowing a collar with a different pattern or color—coordinated with the outfit—to peek out from beneath the “tamoto” of the patterned kimono, thereby accentuating the stylish look.
It should be avoided for formal and semi-formal occasions. Otherwise, it can be worn anywhere. It is particularly well-known among people who wear kimonos in their daily lives as an item that often provokes jealousy from unpleasant middle-aged women who see it.
Also known as a “nagajuban” or simply “juban.”

| The way the soft obi is tied is stylish and elegant, isn't it? From the Rew-You Official Instagram video |
While there is a rule that a haori—a jacket worn over the actual kimono—is the proper garment for such occasions, anyone who claims it is inappropriate to wear a jacket in seasons when a haori isn’t necessary—simply because you aren’t wearing a haori made of ro, sha, or lace—is likely just someone who wants to wear a haori even while exploring caves, so let’s just leave them be.

By the way, in addition to soft-fabric obi, if you’re using a “tsukuri-obi” (pre-tied obi) and securing it with a hook, then combining it with a free-spirited approach using an obi-jime or modern styling—such as ribbons, leather, stylish printed vinyl belts, or even a men’s leather cord necklace with a bold design—you’ll achieve a beautiful, polished look without worrying about the obi losing its shape.
