Since it’s Sunday, I’m writing something gentle.
“Miso-kin,” a cup noodle produced by the legendary YouTuber Hikakin.
If I recall correctly, I first saw a “sold out” sign for it at a 7-Eleven in the town where I was living at the time—right around when the COVID-19 pandemic was just starting, or maybe even before it began.
I’ve heard that before becoming a YouTuber, Hikakin worked at a supermarket for a long time.
Just like at convenience stores, when you work part-time or as a temporary employee at a supermarket or convenience store, you gain a firsthand understanding of how products are sourced, how they’re neatly arranged on the shelves, what prices are set, and what kind of people buy them—all of which gets etched into your memory.
I imagine many people in my country have had part-time jobs at supermarkets or convenience stores during their teenage years, don’t you think?
This process is illustrated in social studies classes when explaining logistics, but when you actually see it in action while working there, it’s really fascinating if you’re into that sort of thing.
A long time ago, when I was a teenager, I also worked part-time at a convenience store. A senior coworker had apparently been entrusted with purchasing by the owner-manager, and I had to listen to him complain about unwanted salads that had been delivered and were sitting unsold on the shelves.
I remember one or two times when he’d show me a delivery slip—one of those nostalgic ones with punch holes along both edges and perforated lines every page—and ask, “What do you think of this?” Not really understanding what it was, I’d just say, “??? I guess it’s fine.”
“...Are you interested in this kind of thing?”
“No, not really,”
I’d reply.
Partly because I didn’t understand what it was, and partly because I didn’t want to spend more time in the back room with the store manager and assistant manager if I took on this new responsibility—but if I’d gone through with it, things might be different for me now (laughs).
After I quit that job, I was really envious of a senior colleague who was in charge of purchasing, and I kept wondering, “Why didn’t that salad sell back then…?”
There’s a certain aptitude for this kind of work, and once you truly grasp the overall flow in your head and feel a concrete sense of accomplishment within your own reality, you suddenly start to see how interesting it is.
Running a franchise store is very tough—and that’s probably not the only reason—but the fact that I fundamentally view business as cool and genuinely interesting in practice probably stems from this experience.
I’d been thinking, “This Miso Kin is always sold out…”—seeing signs like “Limit one per customer” or piles of cups for the sister product, the rice porridge (not Miso Kin), left on the shelves for over five years. Then, the other day, I found it on the shelves at my local 7-Eleven.
Hikakin has been a legend ever since “YouTuber” was the dream job for elementary school kids, so I’d vaguely assumed that Miso-kin’s sell-outs were simply a reflection of his popularity. But when I actually tried it, I was truly surprised.
It’s incredibly delicious!
It’s not because Hikakin is popular—it’s because it’s so tasty that it keeps selling out. I was amazed.
I think it’s by far the best-tasting cup noodle out there.
I truly believe Miso-kin should be exported and made into a major domestic industry.
I was genuinely surprised.
I hate people who spout proverbs without hiding their condescending calmness, while overflowing with hypocritical satisfaction—and I hate those kinds of people, too.
Actually, I do like the saying, “Seeing is believing.”
The reason is that I tried it for myself and truly felt, “That’s really true,” back when I was in elementary school.
Immediately, there are plenty of people who cut right to the chase, saying things like, “So let’s go out,” or “You have to meet people, you have to talk to people”—all while giving off a strong vibe of wearing the same T-shirt and sporting a strange smile.
No, no, that’s not right.
I can say this with absolute certainty, because my belief that “seeing is believing” is deeply ingrained.
The amount of information you can gather inside your room and within a mile (one or two blocks from home) is enormous.
Of course, the same goes for eventually walking through a distant, unfamiliar country.
Both offer an equally vast amount of information.
Take the few years it took me to actually find “Misokin,” boil the exact amount of water, eat it with my own chopsticks, and declare it the most delicious cup noodle I’ve ever had.
That’s something I could only have done inside my room.
There are infinite things you can only do inside a room.
Inside a room, each of us as individuals is infinitely reflected, and it continues endlessly.
Which is greater: the infinity of the world or the infinity within a room?
I believe both possess the same immense scale.
Either way, I’m right there in the midst of it all. In my case, I can sit in a beautiful wooden chair with a stylish backrest, wearing heels, while tilting a white telescope mounted on a beautiful Art Nouveau-style iron tripod diagonally toward the sky, and gaze at the beauty and wonder of the world with the vastness of this universe right beside me.
“Word of mouth” isn’t just town gossip.
It’s a vast collection of experiences.
I think “Misokin” is still often sold out, but if you happen to find it, please give it a try.
I’ll share with all of you in the Sunday edition the delicious flavor packed with my five years of experience.
Well then, have a wonderful Sunday.
